What a novena is

A novena is a prayer made on nine days in a row, asking for a grace or preparing for a feast. The number comes from the nine days the Apostles, with Mary, waited in the Upper Room between the Ascension and Pentecost (Acts 1:14) — the Church's first novena.

The dates here are the ones that end on the eve of the saint's feast: the ninth day falls the day before, and the feast closes the novena. If you start late, it does not matter: pray from the day you are on and carry on.
