NovenaNovena
In pictures he nearly always carries a broom. It is not decoration: for years that was his work in the Dominican priory of the Holy Rosary in Lima, which he entered as a helper because the law of the viceroyalty did not allow the son of a freed slave woman to become a friar. He swept, washed, cut his brothers’ hair, nursed the sick and fed the poor of the city. When Pope John XXIII canonised him in 1962, he recalled the name the people of Lima had given him: Martin of Charity.
This novena is prayed from 25 October to 2 November, the nine days before the feast of Saint Martin de Porres, known in Brazil as Saint Martin of Lima: 3 November, the day of his death, in the General Roman Calendar. In Ireland his memorial moves to 5 November, because the 3rd belongs to Saint Malachy. Pray it with trust, not as a bargain: a novena does not oblige God to anything, it teaches us how to ask. The prayer is the same on all nine days and is at the foot of the page.
What changes from one day to the next is the stage of his life: his birth in Lima, the barber’s trade, the priory door, the humiliations, the infirmary, the charity that cannot wait, the poor and the animals, prayer before the tabernacle, and his death. Each day brings a passage of Scripture that sheds light on that stage; on the last two, the words of the pope who canonised him.

For you are all the children of God by faith, in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized in Christ, have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek: there is neither bond nor free: there is neither male nor female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. Carta de São Paulo aos Gálatas 3,26-28Letter of Saint Paul to the Galatians 3:26-28
Martin was born in Lima, in the viceroyalty of Peru, on 9 December 1579. His mother, Ana Velázquez, was a freed Black woman; his father, a Spanish nobleman, did not own him at birth and soon left the family. He grew up poor, with his mother and younger sister, in a city that divided people by colour and by birth: the law did not even allow descendants of African slaves to take vows in a religious order. By baptism, though, he was what Paul writes to the Galatians: a child of God, clothed in Christ. Begin the novena by giving thanks for your own baptism, and place before God those pushed to the margins today.
Dia 2 — 26 de outubroDay 2 — 26 October · Um ofício nas mãosA trade in his hands
As every man hath received grace, ministering the same one to another: as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Primeira Carta de São Pedro 4,10First Letter of Saint Peter 4:10
While still a boy, Martin was apprenticed to a barber-surgeon. In those days a barber did more than cut hair: he let blood, dressed wounds and prepared remedies. The boy learnt the trade well and never let it go; in the priory he went on cutting the friars’ hair and caring for the sick. For that reason, in 1966, Saint Paul VI declared him patron of the barbers and hairdressers of Italy. A gift received is a gift for others. Ask today for the grace to put your work, whatever it is, at the service of those in need, and offer God what you do with your hands.
Dia 3 — 27 de outubroDay 3 — 27 October · O último de todosLast of all
If any man desire to be first, he shall be the last of all, and the minister of all. Evangelho de São Marcos 9,35Gospel of Mark 9:34
Ainda adolescente, Martinho bateu à porta do convento dominicano do Santo Rosário. While still in his teens, Martin knocked at the door of the Dominican priory of the Holy Rosary. He did not ask to be a friar, because the law forbade it: he asked to enter as a “donado”, a helper who wore the habit and lived with the community in return for the humblest work. He swept, washed, served in the kitchen and cut his brothers’ hair. After some eight years of this, the prior, Juan de Lorenzana, set the law aside and admitted him to vows as a lay brother; Martin was 24. Ask today for the grace to serve without competing for first place, as he served.
Dia 4 — 28 de outubroDay 4 — 28 October · Manso e humildeMeek and humble
Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. Evangelho de São Mateus 11,29Gospel of Matthew 11:29
Not everyone in the priory treated him as a brother. Some called him a “mulatto dog”; others mocked his birth. Martin did not hit back. It is told that when the priory was in debt and there was talk of selling some of its goods, he offered himself: “I am only a poor mulatto; sell me.” His humility was neither weakness nor contempt for himself: it was the freedom of someone who no longer needs to defend himself, because he has learnt from Christ. Pray today for anyone who has humiliated you, and ask for a meek heart that does not keep turning the offence over.
Dia 5 — 29 de outubroDay 5 — 29 October · Na enfermariaIn the infirmary
[…] enfermo, e visitastes-me […]. Em verdade vos digo que quantas vezes o fizestes a um destes meus irmãos mais pequeninos, a mim o fizestes.[…] sick, and you visited me […]. Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. Evangelho de São Mateus 25,36.40Gospel of Matthew 25:36, 40
At 34 Martin was given charge of the priory infirmary, and he served there until his death. He nursed the sick friars, but also those who came in from outside: from Spanish noblemen to slaves just brought from Africa. For him there were no first-class and second-class patients. In time people in Lima began to say that a glass of water from his hands was enough to make the sick better. The fame of cures came later; before it came the patience of every day, at the side of each bed. Today, visit or ring someone who is ill, and pray for those who work in hospitals.
Chegando-se, atou-lhe as feridas, deitando nelas azeite e vinho e, pondo-o sobre o seu animal, levou-o para uma hospedaria e tratou-o.But a certain Samaritan being on his journey, came near him; and seeing him, was moved with compassion. And going up to him, bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine: and setting him upon his own beast, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. Evangelho de São Lucas 10,33-34Gospel of Luke 10:33-34
It is told that, at a time when his superiors had forbidden him to bring the sick in from outside the priory, Martin took a wounded, bleeding Indigenous man into his own cell. Rebuked for disobeying, he replied, according to the accounts (the exact words vary from one source to another), that he had not known that the precept of obedience came before that of charity. It was not rebellion: it was the Samaritan who cannot pass by on the other side. Ask today for eyes to see who has fallen on your road, and the courage to stop.
Dia 7 — 31 de outubroDay 7 — 31 October · As aves do céuThe birds of the air
Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns: and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not you of much more value than they? Evangelho de São Mateus 6,26Gospel of Matthew 6:26
Martin begged alms around the city and shared food, clothing and medicine with the poor of Lima, above all with Black people, those of mixed race and the country people who did the heaviest work. The early accounts also speak of his tenderness towards animals. Pictures show him with a dog, a cat and a mouse eating from the same dish; it is a story from tradition, not a checked account, but it says what matters: there was room in his heart for the whole of God’s creation. Today, give something to whoever asks you, and entrust to the Father, who feeds the birds, whatever you lack.
Dia 8 — 1º de novembroDay 8 — 1 November · Diante do sacrárioBefore the tabernacle
He also loved with a special charity the august Sacrament of the Eucharist, which, often hidden away, he would adore for long hours in the tabernacle […]. He loved the Virgin Mary beyond belief, and always held her as a dear Mother.
Everything Martin did by day was born of what he did by night. The pope who canonised him recalled that he wept as he contemplated Christ crucified and spent hours, out of sight, before the Blessed Sacrament. Martin also had saintly friends in the same city: the Dominican brother John Macías, of another priory in Lima, and, according to tradition, Saint Rose of Lima, a Dominican tertiary. Today, if you can, spend a few minutes before the tabernacle, or pray one decade of the Rosary, asking that your service to others may be born of prayer.
He excused the faults of others; he forgave bitter injuries […]; he gladly tended the sick; he gave food, clothing and medicine to the weak; with all his strength he helped the country people, Black people and those of mixed race, who at that time did the lowliest work, so that the voice of the people called him Martin of Charity.
Martin died in the priory of the Rosary on 3 November 1639, aged 59, while the friars prayed around him. He was beatified by Gregory XVI in 1837 and canonised by Saint John XXIII on 6 May 1962; his remains are venerated in the basilica of Santo Domingo in Lima. Tomorrow is his feast, and today is All Souls’ Day: pray for your own dead as well. End the novena by asking for what he lived: a concrete charity that forgives, makes excuses for others and does not choose whom it will serve.

Saint Martin de Porres, humble brother of the priory of the Rosary, who swept its corridors, cared for the sick without asking where they came from and shared your bread with the poor of Lima: look on me too. You know what it is to be pushed aside, and what it is to serve unseen. Teach me to trust the Father, who feeds the birds of the air, and to love in deeds and not only in words. Bring to Jesus, present in the tabernacle you so loved to adore, the request I entrust to you, and obtain for me the grace I now need, if it is for the glory of God and the good of my soul.

About the texts. The Scripture texts are, in Portuguese, the Tradução Brasileira (1917) and, in English, the Douay-Rheims (American edition of 1899), both in the public domain; the verse numbering of Mark differs between them (9:35 in one, 9:34 in the other). The quotations for days 8 and 9 are short passages from Saint John XXIII’s homily at the canonisation (6 May 1962; Latin original in AAS 54, 1962), which I translated from the Spanish text published by the Holy See. I have not used sayings of Saint Martin as the quotation of the day: the words the early accounts attribute to him come down to us in differing versions, so they appear only within the text, introduced with “it is told” or “according to the accounts”. His friendship with Saint Rose of Lima is tradition; the dog, the cat and the mouse eating from one dish are devotional legend. The prayer was composed for this novena; the closing invocation is the traditional one. The image is an engraving by Michel Vermeiren (Antwerp, second half of the nineteenth century), in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, in the public domain.
