On the night of the farewell, when Jesus had just said that he would show himself to whoever loves him, one of the apostles interrupted with a question, and John takes care to say who it was: “Judas, not the Iscariot”. It is the only sentence of Jude Thaddeus in the Gospels, and it is a question. The rest of what he left is a letter of twenty-five verses, one of the shortest in the Bible.
This novena is prayed from 19 to 27 October, the nine days before his feast on 28 October, which the Church celebrates together with that of Saint Simon. He is known in Brazil and around the world as the saint of hard and desperate causes. That devotion is popular and old; it is not dogma, and the Church does not teach that he answers more than any other saint. Pray it with trust, not as a bargain: a novena does not oblige God to anything, it teaches us how to ask. The prayer is the same on all nine days and is at the foot of the page.
What changes is the company, and the company is his own letter. The nine days begin with the question in the Gospel and then walk through Jude’s letter, verse by verse: the servant who introduces himself, the greeting, the faith to be defended, remembering, hope, care for those who are lost and the closing praise. The texts are from Scripture, in public-domain translations.

Respondeu Jesus: Se alguém me amar, guardará a minha palavra, e meu Pai o amará, e nós viremos a ele e faremos nele morada.Judas saith to him, not the Iscariot: Lord, how is it, that thou wilt manifest thyself to us, and not to the world? Jesus answered, and said to him: If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him. Evangelho de São João 14,22-23Gospel of John 14:22-23
The Gospels know two apostles of this name. In the lists of the Twelve (Lk 6:16; Acts 1:13) this one appears as “Judas of James”, which tradition understands as “brother of James”. John, who knew him well, takes care to warn us: “not the Iscariot”. It is the only sentence of his that the Gospels keep: a question, asked at table, on the night of the farewell. He wanted to understand why the Lord would show himself to the disciples and not to the world. Jesus does not argue: he answers with love and with a dwelling place. Begin the novena as he did, asking frankly, and listening to what the Lord answers to the one who keeps his word.
Dia 2 — 20 de outubroDay 2 — 20 October · Servo e irmãoServant and brother
Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James: to them that are beloved in God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called. Carta de São Judas, 1Letter of Saint Jude, 1
The letter opens with two words of introduction: servant of Jesus Christ, brother of James. He adds no title of honour. He calls himself a servant and leans on the name of his brother, the James whom the Church of Jerusalem knew well. And those he writes to he calls beloved and kept: it is not Christians who hold on to the faith, it is God who keeps them. A novena begins there. Not with who I am, nor with the strength I have left, but with the One who keeps me. Pray today with that smallness: that of one who asks as a servant, not as a creditor.
Dia 3 — 21 de outubroDay 3 — 21 October · Misericórdia, paz e caridadeMercy, peace and charity
Misericórdia, paz e caridade vos sejam multiplicadas.Mercy unto you, and peace, and charity be fulfilled. Carta de São Judas, 2Letter of Saint Jude, 2
It is a greeting, and it is also the request of one who prays for someone: that mercy, peace and charity be “fulfilled”. He does not promise that everything will be solved. He asks for what grows in the middle of the trouble: the mercy God has, the peace that does not depend on the situation changing, the love that holds up the weary. Today, as you name your intention, ask for this too, for yourself and for those you love. Often the first grace of a hard case is not the solution, but the peace to carry it with faith.
Dia 4 — 22 de outubroDay 4 — 22 October · Pelejar pela féTo contend for the faith
Dearly beloved, taking all care to write unto you concerning your common salvation, I was under a necessity to write unto you: to beseech you to contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints. Carta de São Judas, 3Letter of Saint Jude, 3
The letter was born of a change of plans. Jude wanted to write about the salvation all share; he found himself obliged to write something else, an exhortation: to contend for the faith “once delivered to the saints”. Those who turn to this apostle often arrive weary, at the end of their strength, and his letter answers with perseverance: faith is not invented anew in every crisis; it is received, kept and defended. Ask today for the grace not to let go of what God has already given you, even when the cause seems lost.
When Michael the archangel, disputing with the devil, contended about the body of Moses, he durst not bring against him the judgment of railing speech, but said: The Lord command thee. Carta de São Judas, 9Letter of Saint Jude, 9
To speak of those who spread error, Jude recalls a scene that is not in the Old Testament but seems to come from a Jewish tradition of his time: not even the archangel Michael, disputing with the devil, dared to pronounce a condemnation on his own authority; he said only: “The Lord command thee”. For anyone carrying a cause that involves other people, an injustice, a family quarrel, a lawsuit, it is a practical lesson: hand the judgement over to God, and do not answer evil with the same weapons. Pray today for the one who has wronged you.
But you, my dearly beloved, be mindful of the words which have been spoken before by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, who told you, that in the last time there should come mockers, walking according to their own desires in ungodlinesses. Carta de São Judas, 17-18Letter of Saint Jude, 17-18
Jude looks back: “be mindful of the words” of the apostles, who had already warned that times of mockery would come. It is counsel for when faith is put to the test: remember. Remember what the Lord has already said, what he has already done in your life, the times when help came when nobody expected it. Today, before you pray, make a short list of three graces you have already received. The hope of one who asks rests on the memory of having been heard, and giving thanks is the best way to begin asking.
But you, my beloved, building yourselves upon your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, unto life everlasting. Carta de São Judas, 20-21Letter of Saint Jude, 20-21
This is where the letter stops warning and begins to counsel, and it is what makes it fit for a novena. In four verbs there is a way for hard days: build yourselves up in faith, pray in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, wait for the mercy of Christ. Build, pray, remain, wait. Hope here is not optimism: it is an active waiting, resting on mercy and not on circumstances. Today pray the Our Father slowly, once only, attending to each petition, and let it tell you what you need to ask for.
Dia 8 — 26 de outubroDay 8 — 26 October · Arrebatando-os do fogoPulling them out of the fire
[…] e salvai-os, arrebatando-os do fogo; de outros tende misericórdia com temor.[…] But others save, pulling them out of the fire. And on others have mercy, in fear. Carta de São Judas, 23Letter of Saint Jude, 23
At the end of the letter Jude asks something of his reader: to care for those in danger. To pray to a saint of hard cases is, very often, to pray for someone else: a child who has drifted away, a sick person, a friend without work. The letter asks for mercy and prudence, “in fear”, without thinking oneself better than anyone. Today, put into your prayer, by name, someone for whom you have little hope, and pray for that person gently. You do not have to know how God will act; it is enough not to stop carrying that person to him.
Dia 9 — 27 de outubroDay 9 — 27 October · Àquele que pode guardarTo him who is able to preserve
Now to him who is able to preserve you without sin, and to present you spotless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, in the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the only God our Saviour through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory and magnificence, empire and power, before all ages, and now, and for all ages of ages. Amen. Carta de São Judas, 24-25Letter of Saint Jude, 24-25
The letter ends in praise, and it is one of the best-known endings in the New Testament. Tomorrow is his feast, celebrated together with Simon, the other apostle with whom the Church remembers him on the same day. According to an ancient tradition, the two preached in Persia and were martyred there, although historians debate the details; the relics of both are venerated in Saint Peter’s Basilica. End the novena as Jude ended his letter: handing over the request and passing on to praise, sure that God is able to keep what has been entrusted to him.

A São Judas TadeuTo Saint Jude Thaddeus
Saint Jude Thaddeus, apostle and servant of Jesus Christ, brother of James, who questioned the Lord on the night of the farewell and wrote to Christians that they should keep themselves in the love of God: take me by the hand in this hour. You know the weight of what I carry, and the Lord knows it better still. I do not ask you to explain everything to me, nor that God should do as I command. I ask you to pray with me, that I may trust, not give up, and receive what is best for my soul, and the grace I need so much now, if it is God’s will.

O pedido final é a invocação tradicional.
About the texts. Every sentence is from Scripture. In Portuguese I use the Tradução Brasileira (1917), in the public domain, rather than Figueiredo, whose text I could not check against a reliable edition; in English, the Douay-Rheims (American edition of 1899). The two rest on slightly different ancient texts at some points of verse 1 and verse 22, so day 8 quotes only verse 23, where they agree. The letter presents itself as by “Jude, brother of James”, and most Catholic commentators identify him with the apostle Jude Thaddeus; this is the traditional reading, not unanimous among scholars. His preaching and martyrdom in Persia, with Simon, are ancient tradition, not historical certainty. The prayer was composed for this novena; the traditional prayer to Saint Jude is of popular, anonymous authorship, and I have not reproduced it. The closing invocation is the traditional one. The image is by El Greco, Saint Jude Thaddeus (c. 1610-1614), in the public domain.
