Nossa Senhora das GraçasOur Lady of the Miraculous Medal
On 27 November 1830, at half past five in the afternoon, in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity in the rue du Bac in Paris, a 24-year-old novice saw Our Lady standing on the globe, with rays of light falling from her hands, and heard the request to have a medal struck. The novice was Catherine Labouré. Within a few years the people of Paris were calling the medal “miraculous”.
In Brazil she is Nossa Senhora das Graças, Our Lady of Graces; elsewhere, Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. The feast, on 27 November, is kept by the Vincentian family and in countless parishes. This novena is prayed on the nine days before it, 18 to 26 November. The prayer is the same every day and is here below, whole: a prayer composed for this novena, the invocation of the medal and the Memorare.
The nine days follow Catherine’s life and the apparitions of 1830 step by step: the girl who lost her mother, the vocation, the July night in the chapel, the globe, the rays, the invocation, the reverse of the medal, the epidemic of 1832 and, on the last day, the forty-six years of silence in which the visionary served the poor without telling anyone who she was.

Dia 1 — 18 de novembroDay 1 — 18 November · Agora, a minha mãeNow, my mother
He saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother. And from that hour, the disciple took her to his own.
Zoé Labouré, who in religious life would be Catherine, was born on 2 May 1806 at Fain-lès-Moutiers in Burgundy, the daughter of farmers. In 1815 her mother, Madeleine, died at forty-six. It is told that the little girl, in tears, climbed on a chair to kiss the statue of Our Lady and said: “Now you will be my mother.” Like the disciple at the foot of the cross, she took Mary into her home. Today, pray for those who have lost their mother, and give to Our Lady whatever in you has been left an orphan.
Dia 2 — 19 de novembroDay 2 — 19 November · A vocaçãoThe vocation
Fala, Senhor, porque o teu servo escuta.Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth. 1 Samuel 3,101 Samuel 3:10 (1 Kings in the Douay) · Douay-Rheims
At twelve, Catherine was running her father’s house and farm, and went every day to pray in the village church. It is told that she dreamt of an old priest who said that God had plans for her, and that years later she recognised his face in a portrait at the house of the Daughters of Charity in Châtillon: it was Saint Vincent de Paul. Her father refused her vocation and sent her to work in Paris. Only in 1830 did she enter the novitiate in the rue du Bac. Today, pray for vocations, and for those still waiting for their hour.
Come to the foot of this altar. There graces will be poured out on all those who ask for them with confidence and fervour.
On the night of 18 July 1830, the eve of Saint Vincent’s feast, at half past eleven, a child woke Catherine: “The Blessed Virgin is waiting for you.” In the chapel, Our Lady was seated in the celebrant’s chair, and the novice rested her hands on Mary’s knees. “It was the sweetest moment of my life,” she would write. Mary pointed to the altar of the tabernacle: that is where graces are poured out. Today, if you can, visit the Blessed Sacrament and ask with confidence.
Dia 4 — 21 de novembroDay 4 — 21 November · O mundo nas mãosThe world in her hands
This ball represents the whole world, France, and each person in particular.
On 27 November, during the novices’ evening prayer, Our Lady appeared again, standing on half a globe and crushing the serpent. In her hands she held a small golden ball with a cross on top, and raised it towards heaven. The words Catherine heard move from the whole world to each person in particular: before God, no one is lost in the crowd. Today, pray for the world, for your own country and for one particular person, by name.
These rays are the symbol of the graces I shed upon those who ask me for them.
Then Catherine saw Mary’s hands open, with rings of precious stones on her fingers, and from them came rays of a dazzling brilliance, falling on the earth. That is why Brazilians call her Our Lady of Graces. But the words carry a simple condition: graces come to those who ask. God does not need our prayer to know what we lack; it is we who need to ask. Today, ask without embarrassment for what you need, and for what you had forgotten to ask.
Dia 6 — 23 de novembroDay 6 — 23 November · Concebida sem pecadoConceived without sin
Ó Maria concebida sem pecado, rogai por nós que recorremos a vós.O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
An oval formed around the apparition, and Catherine saw these words written in letters of gold. They say who Mary is: preserved from sin from the first instant, by the grace that came to her from the merits of her Son. Twenty-four years later, on 8 December 1854, Pope Pius IX defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. And the words also say who we are: those who have recourse to her. Today, repeat the invocation slowly, several times through the day.
Dia 7 — 24 de novembroDay 7 — 24 November · A cruz e os dois coraçõesThe cross and the two hearts
And thy own soul a sword shall pierce, that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be revealed. Lucas 2,35Luke 2:35 · Douay-Rheims
Then the picture turned, and Catherine saw the reverse of the medal: above, the letter M surmounted by a cross; below, two hearts, one crowned with thorns, the Heart of Jesus, and one pierced by a sword, the Heart of Mary, as Simeon foretold in the Temple. On the medal, twelve stars run round the edge. There are no words on the reverse: the signs speak for themselves. Mary is always joined to her Son’s cross. Today, pray for those who carry a heavy cross, and offer your own alongside hers.
Have, have a medal struck after this model. Those who wear it with confidence will receive great graces.
Catherine told everything to her confessor, Father Aladel, who at first did not believe her. The medal was struck only in 1832, with the permission of the Archbishop of Paris, while the city was being ravaged by cholera. In June the Daughters of Charity began to give out the first medals. Healings and conversions followed, and the people began to call it “miraculous”. The medal is not a charm: the promise is for those who wear it with confidence. Today, pray for the sick and for those who are far from God.
Dia 9 — 26 de novembroDay 9 — 26 November · Quarenta e seis anos de silêncioForty-six years of silence
Eu te louvo, Pai, Senhor do céu e da terra, porque escondeste estas coisas aos sábios e entendidos e as revelaste aos pequeninos.I confess to thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them to the little ones. Mateus 11,25Matthew 11:25 · Douay-Rheims
Amanhã é a festa. Tomorrow is the feast. In 1831 Catherine was sent to the hospice of Enghien at Reuilly, a poor district of Paris. There she spent forty-six years in the kitchen, the linen room, the porter’s lodge and caring for old men, while hardly anyone knew she was the sister of the medal. Near the end, she was asked whether she was afraid to die: “Why be afraid of going to see Our Lord, his Mother and Saint Vincent?” She died on 31 December 1876, and Pius XII canonised her in 1947. Today, place in Our Lady’s hands what you have asked for these nine days.

Novena a Nossa Senhora das GraçasNovena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal
Em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo. Amém.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Immaculate Virgin, Our Lady of Graces: in the chapel in the rue du Bac you showed a young novice your open hands and the rays falling on the earth, and you said they are the graces you shed on those who ask for them. Here we are to ask. Look upon the whole world and upon each of us in particular. Obtain for us from your Son conversion of heart, peace for our families, strength for the sick and comfort for those who suffer. Teach us the simple trust of Saint Catherine Labouré, who served you in the poor in silence, and lead us to Jesus, who is the way, the truth and the life.

Com as palavras da medalhaWith the words of the medal
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee.
Com as palavras da IgrejaWith the words of the Church
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

About the texts. The words of Our Lady and of Saint Catherine Labouré are our own translation from the French, from the saint’s account as published by the Chapel of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal in Paris. The Scripture in English is the Douay-Rheims (Challoner); in Portuguese, our own translation, faithful to the Latin of the Vulgate. The invocation of the medal, the Memorare, the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be are traditional prayers in the public domain. The prayer “Immaculate Virgin, Our Lady of Graces…” was composed for this novena. The facts come from the shrine in the rue du Bac and the sources listed in the verification file; what we could not check has been left out. The nineteenth-century painting is attributed to Alois Gege and his workshop, and is in the public domain.
