A data muda todo ano, porque depende da Páscoa.7 to 15 May 2027 — the nine days of prayer before Pentecost, which in 2027 falls on Sunday 16 May. The dates move every year, because they depend on Easter.

After Jesus was taken up into heaven, the Apostles did not go straight out to preach. They came back from Mount Olivet to Jerusalem, went up into an upper room and stayed there in prayer, “with Mary the mother of Jesus”. They were waiting for what the Lord had promised them: “you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost, not many days hence.” On the day of Pentecost the Spirit came down upon them. Many see in those days of waiting the model of every novena, which is why this one is often called the first of them all.

In 1897, in the encyclical Divinum illud munus, Pope Leo XIII ordered that every parish in the world should hold a novena before Pentecost, or Whitsunday, every year. As Pentecost depends on the date of Easter, the days change from year to year: in 2027 the novena runs from Friday 7 May to Saturday 15 May, the eve of Pentecost. The prayer is the same on all nine days and is at the foot of the page. It can be prayed alone, as a family or with a group, and it can be printed.

What changes each day is the word that goes with the prayer. The nine days follow the road the Apostles themselves took: the promise of the Father, the waiting in prayer with Mary, what Jesus said of the Comforter at the Last Supper, what Saint Paul teaches of the Spirit who prays in us and pours out the love of God, the seven gifts foretold by Isaiah and, on the last day, the wind and the fire of Pentecost. The prayer draws on the Church’s two great hymns to the Holy Spirit, the Veni Creator and the Veni Sancte Spiritus.

Ao Espírito SantoTo the Holy Spirit

Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life, Love of the Father and the Son: like the Apostles in the Upper Room, with Mary the mother of Jesus, I wait for you. Come and dwell in me as in a temple. Give light to what is dark, warm what is cold, set straight what is crooked. Give me your seven gifts, so that I may know Jesus, keep his words and bear witness to him where I live. Receive what I entrust to you today.

Do hino Veni CreatorFrom the hymn Veni Creator

Come, Creator Spirit, visit the minds of those who are yours, and fill with grace from on high the hearts that you have made.

Vós sois chamado o Consolador, dom do Deus altíssimo, fonte viva, fogo, caridade e unção espiritual.

You are called the Paraclete, gift of God most high, living spring, fire, love and anointing of the soul.

Kindle a light in our senses, pour love into our hearts, and with your unfailing strength make firm the weakness of our body.

Da sequência Veni Sancte SpiritusFrom the sequence Veni Sancte Spiritus

Vinde, Pai dos pobres; vinde, doador dos dons; vinde, luz dos corações. Consolador perfeito, doce hóspede da alma, doce alívio.

Come, Father of the poor; come, Giver of gifts; come, Light of hearts. Best of comforters, sweet guest of the soul, sweet refreshment.

Wash what is stained, water what is dry, heal what is wounded. Bend what is rigid, warm what is cold, guide what has gone astray.

Amém.

Amen.

Para terminarTo close

Pai-Nosso · Ave-Maria · Glória ao Pai.

Our Father · Hail Mary · Glory be.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love.

Enviai o vosso Espírito, e tudo será criado. E renovareis a face da terra.

Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth.

Oremos.

Let us pray. O God, who taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that in the same Spirit we may relish what is right and ever rejoice in his consolation. Through Christ our Lord.

About the texts. The Scripture verses in English are from the Douay-Rheims (Challoner), in the public domain; in Portuguese they are my own translation from the Latin Vulgate. The quotation for the third day is slightly abridged, marked [...]. The line of Leo XIII (day 7) and the passages of his quoted on days 5, 6 and 9 are my own translation from the Latin original of the encyclical Divinum illud munus (9 May 1897). The verses of the Veni Creator Spiritus, a hymn whose text is known from the ninth century and is usually ascribed to Rabanus Maurus, and of the sequence Veni Sancte Spiritus, from the late twelfth or early thirteenth century and of uncertain authorship, are my own unrhymed and abridged translation from the Latin. The antiphon “Come, Holy Spirit” and the closing prayer are the Church’s traditional ones. The prayer to the Holy Spirit was composed for this novena. The image is Juan Bautista Maíno’s Pentecost (17th century, Prado Museum, Madrid), in the public domain.
