Before he was twenty-one, Karol Wojtyła had already buried his mother, his brother and his father. He worked in a quarry, studied theology in secret, and was ordained a priest soon after the war. In 1978 he stood in Saint Peter's Square, as pope.
This novena is prayed from 13 to 21 October, the nine days before his memorial on 22 October, an optional memorial in the General Roman Calendar. The date is that of the solemn beginning of his pontificate in 1978. He was beatified on 1 May 2011 and canonised on 27 April 2014, both on a Divine Mercy Sunday. The prayer is the same on all nine days, and it is here below, whole.
What changes is the company: each day brings a sentence, from Scripture or from him, and a line from the life it belongs to. The nine days follow his life, from Wadowice through the doors opened to Christ, through Mary, the Rosary and Mercy, to the vigil of his death.

Dia 1 — 13 de outubroDay 1 — 13 October · WadowiceWadowice
Porque meu pai e minha mãe me abandonaram, mas o Senhor me recolheu. For my father and my mother have left me: but the Lord hath taken me up.
Karol Wojtyła was born on 18 May 1920 in Wadowice and was baptised in the town's parish church on 20 June. His mother, Emilia, died in 1929; his brother Edmund, a physician, in 1932; his father, also Karol, in 1941. A sister, Olga, had died before he was born. Near the end of his life, in his testament, he went back “to the beginning” and named his parents, his brother, his sister and the parish of Wadowice. Pray today for those who lost early the ones who raised them.
Dia 2 — 14 de outubroDay 2 — 14 October · A pedreira e o teatroThe quarry and the theatre
Work is a good thing for man, a good thing for his humanity, because through work man not only transforms nature, but also fulfils himself as a human being and, in a certain sense, “becomes more a human being”. São João Paulo II, encíclica Laborem exercens, 9 (14/9/1981); tradução minha do italianoSaint John Paul II, encyclical Laborem exercens, 9 (14 Sept 1981); my own translation from the Italian
Under the Nazi occupation the university was closed in 1939, and young Karol had to work in a quarry, from 1940 to 1944, and then in the Solvay chemical factory, to earn a living and to avoid deportation to Germany. At the same time he was one of the pioneers of the “Rhapsodic Theatre”, clandestine like the seminary he would soon enter. The man who wrote this sentence years later knew what it is to carry stone. Pray today for those who work, and for those who have no work.
You have not chosen me: but I have chosen you; and have appointed you, that you should go, and should bring forth fruit; and your fruit should remain.
In 1942, aware of his call to the priesthood, he began courses at the clandestine seminary of Kraków, run by Archbishop Adam Stefan Sapieha. He was ordained by him in Kraków on 1 November 1946, the feast of All Saints. The cardinal then sent him to Rome, where he took his doctorate in theology in 1948 with a thesis on faith in the works of Saint John of the Cross. Pray today for priests, and for anyone who feels in the heart a call they cannot yet name.
Dia 4 — 16 de outubroDay 4 — 16 October · As portasThe doors
Não tenhais medo! Abri, ou melhor, escancarai as portas a Cristo! [...] Cristo sabe «o que há no homem». Só ele o sabe!Do not be afraid! Open — indeed, fling wide — the doors to Christ! [...] Christ knows “what is in man”. He alone knows it! São João Paulo II, homilia da Missa de início do ministério petrino, 22/10/1978, n. 5 (original italiano; tradução minha)Saint John Paul II, homily at the Mass inaugurating his Petrine ministry, 22 Oct 1978, n. 5 (Italian original; my own translation)
On 16 October 1978 the conclave elected Cardinal Wojtyła, aged fifty-eight. Six days later, in Saint Peter's Square, he solemnly began his ministry. He asked everyone not to be afraid to welcome Christ, and he gave the reason: man today so often does not know what he carries within himself, and only Christ knows it. Pray today about the fear that keeps you behind a closed door.
Dia 5 — 17 de outubroDay 5 — 17 October · Totus tuusTotus tuus
Sou todo vosso, e tudo o que tenho vos pertence, ó meu amável Jesus, por Maria, vossa santa Mãe.I am all yours, and all that I have is yours, O my loving Jesus, through Mary, your holy Mother. São Luís Maria Grignion de Montfort, Tratado da Verdadeira Devoção, 233 (tradução minha do francês); fórmula que João Paulo II fez seu lema, «Totus tuus»Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort, True Devotion to Mary, 233 (my own translation from the French); the formula John Paul II made his motto, “Totus tuus”
Reze hoje entregando a Maria o que tem, sem reservar nada.“Totus tuus”, “all yours”, said to Mary, was Karol Wojtyła's episcopal motto. In 2002 he wrote that the principle behind this motto, Mary's maternal mediation that leads to Christ, he had experienced very strongly, and that the motto is inspired by the teaching of Montfort. On 13 May 1981, the day of the first apparition at Fátima, he was shot in Saint Peter's Square; the bullet was later set in the crown of the statue of Our Lady of Fátima. Pray today by handing Mary what you have, keeping nothing back.
To recite the Rosary is nothing other than to contemplate with Mary the face of Christ. São João Paulo II, carta apostólica Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 3 (16/10/2002; tradução minha do italiano)Saint John Paul II, apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae, 3 (16 Oct 2002; my own translation from the Italian)
With that letter, on 16 October 2002, he proclaimed the Year of the Rosary, from October 2002 to October 2003, and proposed the five luminous mysteries: the Baptism in the Jordan, the wedding at Cana, the proclamation of the Kingdom, the Transfiguration and the institution of the Eucharist. He did not invent another method: he asked that we look at Christ while we pray. Pray one decade of the Rosary slowly today, looking at a single mystery.
How many souls have already been consoled by the invocation “Jesus, I trust in You”, which Providence suggested through Sister Faustina! This simple act of abandonment to Jesus tears through the densest clouds and lets a ray of light into the life of each one. São João Paulo II, homilia da canonização de Maria Faustina Kowalska, 30/4/2000, n. 7 (italiano; tradução minha)Saint John Paul II, homily at the canonisation of Maria Faustina Kowalska, 30 Apr 2000, n. 7 (Italian; my own translation)
At that same Mass, on the second Sunday of Easter, he said that this Sunday would from then on be called, in the whole Church, “Divine Mercy Sunday”. The trust he recommended came from a Polish sister, Faustina Kowalska, canonised that day. He saw in that message a consolation above all for those who, crushed by a hard trial or by the weight of their sins, have lost trust in life. Pray the little phrase today, slowly, three times, for what is binding you.
It is Jesus whom you seek when you dream of happiness; it is he who waits for you when nothing you find satisfies you. São João Paulo II, vigília da Jornada Mundial da Juventude, Tor Vergata, 19/8/2000, n. 5 (italiano; tradução minha)Saint John Paul II, vigil of World Youth Day, Tor Vergata, 19 Aug 2000, n. 5 (Italian; my own translation)
He was the pope whom the young followed from city to city. He began World Youth Days, and there were nineteen during his pontificate. At Tor Vergata, in 2000, he called the young “sentinels of the morning” at the dawn of the third millennium. Pray today for the young people of your family and your parish, that they may not settle for anything less than Christ.
I do not know when it will come, but, like everything, I place this moment too in the hands of the Mother of my Master: Totus Tuus. São João Paulo II, Testamento (1979–2000), publicado em 7/4/2005 (tradução minha do italiano; o original é polonês)Saint John Paul II, Testament (1979–2000), published on 7 Apr 2005 (my own translation from the Italian; the original is Polish)
He opened the testament with the words of Matthew 24:42: “Watch, for you do not know on what day your Lord will come”. In his last years the body took from him the steadiness of his steps and of his voice, and he went on appearing before everyone. He died at 9:37 pm on Saturday 2 April 2005, on the vigil of Divine Mercy Sunday. Pray today for the sick and the dying, and ask for a good death.

A São João Paulo IITo Saint John Paul II
Saint John Paul II, who lost your family early, worked with your hands and prayed in the dark, teach me not to be afraid to open the doors of my life to Christ. You entrusted everything to Mary: lead me to her, that I may learn to look at Jesus. Win for me trust in God's mercy and love for the young, the sick and all who suffer. Pray for me, and for the graces I ask in this novena, if they are for the glory of God and the good of my soul.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glória ao Pai, e ao Filho, e ao Espírito Santo. Como era no princípio, agora e sempre. Amém.

Saint John Paul II, pray for us!

About the texts. The sentences of Saint John Paul II come from Vatican documents (the homily of 22 October 1978, Laborem exercens, Rosarium Virginis Mariae, the homily of 30 April 2000, the Tor Vergata vigil of 19 August 2000 and the Testament): they are short quotations with the exact source, and the translation is my own from the Italian. Montfort's formula was likewise translated by me from the French. Scripture follows the Douay-Rheims in English, and in Portuguese it is my own version in the spirit of Figueiredo. The prayer to the saint was composed for this novena; the Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory be are the traditional ones. I did not use the official prayer to Saint John Paul II, nor any publishers' texts. The photograph is of 6 June 1987, from the Reagan White House Photographs (US National Archives), public domain, cropped.
