Nossa Senhora AparecidaOur Lady of Aparecida
In October 1717 three fishermen went down the Paraíba do Sul river looking for fish for a governor’s banquet and caught nothing. The first thing their net brought up was the body of a small statue of Our Lady; the second time, it brought up the head. This is the origin of Our Lady of the Conception Aparecida, patroness of Brazil, whose feast the Church in Brazil keeps on 12 October.
This novena is prayed on the nine days before the feast, 3 to 11 October. The prayer is the same every day, and it is here below, whole: a prayer composed for this novena, the Hail, Holy Queen and the Magnificat. What changes from day to day is the line of Scripture and the meditation.
The nine days follow the story of Aparecida step by step, and at each step set beside it a passage of Scripture about Mary: the net let down, the statue broken and mended, the house that prays the rosary, the chapel and the promises, the crowning, the statue shattered in 1978, the title of patroness, the popes who came and, on the last day, Mary’s “yes”.

Dia 1 — 3 de outubroDay 1 — 3 October · A rede lançadaThe net let down
Master, we have laboured all the night, and have taken nothing: but at thy word I will let down the net. Lucas 5,5Luke 5:5 · Douay-Rheims
In October 1717 the governor of the captaincy of São Paulo and Minas, Dom Pedro de Almeida e Portugal, was due to pass through Guaratinguetá, and the town council sent the river fishermen to find fish for the banquet, though it was not the good season. Three persisted: Domingos Garcia, Filipe Pedroso and João Alves. They went down the Paraíba catching nothing and, like Peter on the lake, they cast the net anyway. That is where the story of Aparecida begins: with people who work and come back empty-handed. Today, pray casting the net of your own life, even without seeing a result.
Dia 2 — 4 de outubroDay 2 — 4 October · A imagem refeitaThe statue made whole
The bruised reed he shall not break, and the smoking flax he shall not extinguish.
At the port of Itaguaçu, João Alves’s net brought up the body of a statue of Our Lady of the Conception, without the head. He cast the net again, further down, and the head came, fitting the statue. It is told that the catch afterwards was so abundant that the three, afraid of capsizing their canoes, went home. The pieces were handed to Silvana da Rocha, who joined them with wax and set the statue on a small altar in her home. God does not discard what comes up broken. Today, pray for whatever in you or in your family seems shattered.
All these were persevering with one mind in prayer with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus. Atos 1,14Acts 1:14 · Douay-Rheims
Filipe Pedroso kept the statue at home for almost fifteen years, and the neighbours gathered before it to pray the rosary and the litany. That was the first shrine of Aparecida: a family room, with no stone altar and no priest at the door. In 1732 his son Atanásio built an oratory open to the public. The Acts of the Apostles show the infant Church in the same way: people gathered, praying with Mary. Today, pray with someone in your household, or remember those who pray for you. A prayer said together is never small.
Dia 4 — 6 de outubroDay 4 — 6 October · A capela e as promessasThe chapel and the promises
Fazei tudo o que ele vos disser.Whatsoever he shall say to you, do ye.
At Cana, Mary sees the lack of wine before anyone else and brings the problem to her Son, demanding nothing. Then, to the servants, she says only this. The devotion of Aparecida grew in the same way: the people brought their needs to her, and she sent them on to Jesus. In 1743 the vicar of Guaratinguetá asked the bishop to approve the devotion, and the first church, on the Morro dos Coqueiros, was opened on 26 July 1745. From early on, the shrine has kept the memory of promises made and answered. Today, bring her one concrete need.
Dia 5 — 7 de outubroDay 5 — 7 October · A coroa e o mantoThe crown and the mantle
Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Lucas 1,48 (Magnificat)Luke 1:48 (Magnificat) · Douay-Rheims
Elas a confirmam. The statue that came out of the river is small, of clay, darkened by silt and by the smoke of candles. In 1888 the Old Basilica was handed over to the faithful, and on 8 September 1904 the statue was solemnly crowned. Mary had said it already in the Magnificat: God regarded her humility, and all generations would call her blessed. The honours Aparecida has received do not change the simple origin of the devotion. They confirm it. Today, pray for Mary’s humility, which receives everything as gift and gives everything back to God.
After that, he saith to the disciple: Behold thy mother.
On 16 May 1978 the statue was the target of an attack and was reduced to one hundred and sixty-five fragments. The restorer Maria Helena Chartuni, then at the São Paulo Museum of Art, reconstructed it, and it returned to its niche. Mary stood by the cross when everything seemed lost, and there she was given as mother to the disciple and to all of us. Anyone who has known loss knows that she remains. Today, pray for those who suffer now and give her your own sorrows, without hurrying for an answer.
Dia 7 — 9 de outubroDay 7 — 9 October · Padroeira do BrasilPatroness of Brazil
Thou art the glory of Jerusalem, thou art the joy of Israel, thou art the honour of our people. Judite 15,10Judith 15:10 · Douay-Rheims
The devotion that was born in a river at Guaratinguetá spread across the whole country. On 16 July 1930 Pope Pius XI, at the request of the Brazilian bishops, declared Our Lady of Aparecida principal patroness of Brazil, and on 31 May 1931 the country was consecrated to her in Rio de Janeiro. Christian tradition applies these words of Judith to Mary. Today, pray for Brazil: for its families, for those who govern, for those who have nothing to eat. And if you live far from it, pray for those you left behind in your homeland.
Dia 8 — 10 de outubroDay 8 — 10 October · Os papas em AparecidaThe popes at Aparecida
Eu vim para que tenham vida, e a tenham em abundância.I am come that they may have life, and may have it more abundantly. João 10,10John 10:10 · Douay-Rheims
Três papas estiveram no Santuário Nacional. Three popes have been to the National Shrine. John Paul II came on 4 July 1980, on his first journey to Brazil, celebrated Mass before some three hundred thousand people and gave the shrine the title of minor basilica. Benedict XVI opened the Fifth General Conference of the Latin American and Caribbean Bishops there on 13 May 2007, its theme echoing John’s Gospel: “that in him our peoples may have life”. Francis prayed there on 24 July 2013, during World Youth Day. Today, pray for the Pope and for the whole Church.
Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. Lucas 1,38Luke 1:38 · Douay-Rheims
Amanhã é a festa. Hoje, reze a Salve-Rainha devagar. Tomorrow is the feast. The novena ends where everything began: in Mary’s “yes”. The story of Aparecida shows that God makes use of ordinary things, a net, a house, clay and wax, when someone says “yes” without seeing the end. The fishermen said it, the Pedroso family said it, the people said it, and the devotion has come down to us. Today, pray the Hail, Holy Queen slowly. Place in Our Lady’s hands what you have asked for these nine days, and ask for the grace to say, in everyday life, what she said.

Novena a Nossa Senhora AparecidaNovena to Our Lady of Aparecida
Em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo. Amém.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Most Holy Virgin, Mother of God and our Mother, under the title of Aparecida: you chose to be found in the waters by the hands of fishermen and to enter a simple house, so that no one might think God draws near only to the great. Look upon us, who cast the net and so often draw it in empty. Make us trust in the word of your Son. What is broken in us, in our families and in our homeland, mend and heal. Teach us to do whatever he tells us, and lead us to Jesus, who is the way, the truth and the life.

Com as palavras da IgrejaWith the words of the Church
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name. And his mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear him. He hath shewed might in his arm: he hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. He hath received Israel his servant, being mindful of his mercy: As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Nossa Senhora Aparecida, rogai por nós.
Our Lady of Aparecida, pray for us.
Em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amém.
Amen.
