He died on 16 October 1755, at Caposele, in southern Italy. He was twenty-nine. He was a lay brother: not a priest, not a preacher in the pulpit, and most of what we know of him is what he did with his hands and with his silence.
This novena is prayed on the nine days before the feast, and the last of them falls on the eve of the anniversary of his death. The prayer is the same on every day: for mothers, for those who await a child and for children still unborn, without forgetting those who grieve because the child does not come, or because the child is gone. It is here below, whole. It promises no result; it places in God’s hands what only He can give.
What changes is the company. Each day brings a word of Scripture and a line from his life, in this order: Muro Lucano, the tailor, the note left for his mother, the vows, the poor, the gifts attributed to him, the slander, mothers and death. Few of his letters and writings are well known, so we have put nothing in his mouth that is not well attested. Where tradition tells a story, it is told as tradition.

Dia 1 — 7 de outubroDay 1 — 7 October · Conhecido antes de nascerKnown before he was born
Antes que eu te formasse no ventre de tua mãe, eu te conheci; e antes que saísses do seio materno, eu te santifiquei, e te constituí profeta entre as nações.Before I formed thee in the bowels of thy mother, I knew thee: and before thou camest forth out of the womb, I sanctified thee, and made thee a prophet unto the nations. Jeremias 1,5Jeremias (Jeremiah) 1:5
Gerard was born at Muro Lucano, a mountain town of Basilicata, in April 1726, the son of a poor tailor, Domenico Maiella, and of Benedetta Galella. He was baptised on 23 April. Nothing in that house announced a saint: only work and little bread. Jeremiah’s word does not say that God chooses the great; it says that He knows each one before any merit. Begin there today: give thanks for your own beginning, and ask that every child about to be born be received as known and wanted by God.
Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. Mateus 11,29Matthew 11:29
When his father died, his mother placed him as a tailor’s apprentice, and the trade made of him a man of the needle and of patience. His biographers tell us that the foreman was harsh with him. He later served in the household of Claudio Albini, Bishop of Lacedonia, until the prelate’s death in 1744, and returned to tailoring. Scripture does not promise those who take up Christ’s yoke an easy life; it promises rest to the soul. Pray today for those who work hard to keep a family, and for those who await a child without knowing whether the money will be enough.
Dia 3 — 9 de outubroDay 3 — 9 October · «Vou me fazer santo»“I am off to become a saint”
Mãe, perdoe-me: vou me fazer santo.Mother, forgive me: I am going to become a saint. Bilhete deixado à mãe, segundo a tradição redentorista (em italiano: «Mamma, perdonami, vado a farmi santo»)Note left for his mother, according to Redemptorist tradition (in Italian: “Mamma, perdonami, vado a farmi santo”)
It is told that when Redemptorist missionaries preached at Muro, Gerard asked to go with them, and the superior, Father Cafaro, refused him because of his frail health. He pressed so hard that his family locked him in his room. It is told that he climbed out of the window on knotted bedsheets, leaving the note on the table. Cafaro, outdone, sent him to the community at Deliceto with a letter calling him one more brother “useless for work”. It was 1749. Pray today for all mothers who watch a child leave, and for children who leave with a divided heart.
He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross. Filipenses 2,8Philippians 2:8
On 16 July 1752 he made his vows in the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer and, to the usual vows, added one: to do always what seemed to him the more perfect. Saint Alphonsus Liguori, the founder, called him “a miracle of obedience”. He was a gardener, sacristan, tailor, porter, cook, carpenter and, at Caposele, clerk of works for the new buildings. His obedience was not that of a man without a will, but of one who had chosen Christ’s. Ask today for the grace to accept, without rebellion, what God asks of you in this season.
Dia 5 — 11 de outubroDay 5 — 11 October · O pai dos pobresFather of the poor
Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. Mateus 25,40Matthew 25:40
Though weak in body, he did the work of three, and his charity earned him the title of “father of the poor”. In 1754, a year of famine, it is told that at Caposele he shared with the hungry what was in the lodge and that the bread did not run out. Whatever one makes of that detail, the central fact does not depend on it: a brother who had almost nothing was always at the door, with his hands full. Pray today for families who await a child in poverty, and for those who help them.
Dia 6 — 12 de outubroDay 6 — 12 October · Os dons e a alegria maiorThe gifts, and the greater joy
Rejoice not in this, that spirits are subject unto you; but rejoice in this, that your names are written in heaven. Lucas 10,20Luke 10:20
Extraordinary gifts were attributed to Gerard even in his lifetime: bilocation, ecstasies, prophecy, discernment of hearts and healings. The processes of beatification, which led to his beatification in 1893 and his canonisation by Pius X on 11 December 1904, gathered these testimonies. It is also said that he foretold the hour of his own death. But Jesus’s word puts everything in its place: the greater joy is not the wonder, it is to belong to God. Pray today for those who need a sign, and ask for the grace to trust even when it does not come.
Dia 7 — 13 de outubroDay 7 — 13 October · A calúnia e o silêncioSlander and silence
Blessed are ye when they shall revile you, and persecute you, and speak all that is evil against you, untruly, for my sake. Be glad and rejoice, for your reward is very great in heaven. Mateus 5,11–12Matthew 5:11–12
In the spring of 1754 a young woman, Neria Caggiano, whom he had helped to enter a convent and who afterwards left it, falsely accused him in a letter to Saint Alphonsus. Gerard was summoned to Pagani, kept from Communion and watched. And he was silent, and did not defend himself. By mid-June the young woman retracted the slander, and Saint Alphonsus praised his patience. Pray today for those who are judged without being heard, and for the many mothers who carry, without fault, the looks of others.
Dia 8 — 14 de outubroDay 8 — 14 October · As mães e o lençoMothers and the handkerchief
Thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast protected me from my mother’s womb. I will praise thee, for thou art fearfully magnified: wonderful are thy works, and my soul knoweth right well. Salmo 138(139),13–14Psalm 138 (139):13–14
This is the central tradition of devotion to Gerard, and it is tradition only. It is told that at the home of the Pirofalo family he left behind a handkerchief and told the young woman to keep it, since one day it would be of use to her. Years later, in a childbirth in which her life was in danger, the woman remembered the handkerchief and asked for it; her pains ceased and she gave birth without difficulty. Since then he is invoked as protector of mothers, children and women in labour. Pray today for each mother and each child, and for those who wait and suffer.
Dia 9 — 15 de outubroDay 9 — 15 October · Poucos anos, uma vida cheiaA few years, a full life
Being made perfect in a short space, he fulfilled a long time. Sabedoria 4,13Wisdom 4:13
Ill with tuberculosis, Gerard died at Caposele, at the sanctuary of Materdomini, on 16 October 1755, aged twenty-nine. He was beatified by Leo XIII on 29 January 1893 and canonised by Pius X on 11 December 1904. He is known for almost nothing that he wrote, and for much of what he was: obedient, poor, silent. End the novena by giving thanks, and place in God’s hands what is left unsaid and unasked: mothers, unborn children, those who wait, and those who weep.

Novena a São Geraldo MajellaNovena to Saint Gerard Majella
Em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo. Amém.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Nada exijo, nada garanto: apenas apresento.
Saint Gerard, lay brother and humble servant of God, known and loved by the Lord before you were born, and invoked by the devotion of the faithful as a friend of mothers and children: bring my prayer to God. For women who await a child, that they may have health, peace and someone to stand by them. For unborn children, that they may be received with love and protected. For mothers who are afraid, and for those who are alone. For those who grieve because the child does not come, or because the child is gone, that they may not lack God’s consolation. I ask you, and I entrust everything to the will of the Father, who knows what we do not know. I demand nothing, I assume nothing: I only bring it before Him.

And I pray with the words of the Mother of Jesus, who also awaited a child:
My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid: for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. Because he that is mighty, hath done great things to me; and holy is his name.

A única frase atribuída a ele, no dia 3, é o bilhete deixado à mãe, transmitido pela tradição redentorista; traduzimos nós mesmos do italiano.
About the texts. Of Saint Gerard’s letters and writings (47 survive, among them 44 letters, and a Regolamento di vita), few are well known, and none has been verified well enough to be quoted here. The days therefore rest on Scripture: in Portuguese, the translation of Fr António Pereira de Figueiredo (public domain), with modernised spelling; in English, the Douay-Rheims. The only sentence attributed to him, on day 3, is the note left for his mother, handed down by Redemptorist tradition; we translated it ourselves from the Italian. The handkerchief, the bread and the extraordinary gifts are tradition, and are told as tradition. Dates and places follow the Catholic Encyclopedia (1913) and the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani (Treccani). The prayer to Saint Gerard was composed for this novena; the Magnificat is the Gospel text of Luke. The portrait is by an unknown artist, late nineteenth or early twentieth century, in the public domain (Wikimedia Commons).
