Ela morreu a 30 de setembro de 1897, aos vinte e quatro anos, depois de dezoito meses tossindo sangue. As últimas palavras foram: «Meu Deus, eu vos amo». Tinha entrado no Carmelo aos quinze.
She died on 30 September 1897, at twenty-four, after eighteen months of coughing blood. Her last words were: “My God, I love you.” She had entered Carmel at fifteen.
Esta novena reza-se nos nove dias que antecedem a festa. A oração é sempre a mesma — é assim que uma novena funciona: a mesma coisa pedida nove vezes, até deixar de ser um pedido e passar a ser uma disposição. Está aqui embaixo, inteira.
This novena is prayed on the nine days before the feast. The prayer is the same every day — that is how a novena works: the same thing asked nine times, until it stops being a request and becomes a disposition. It is here below, whole.
O que muda é a companhia. Cada dia traz uma frase dela, tirada de uma só carta — a que escreveu à irmã Maria do Sagrado Coração a 17 de setembro de 1896, quando esta lhe perguntou se também podia amar a Deus como Teresinha o amava. A resposta coube em nove pedaços.
What changes is the company. Each day carries a sentence of her own, taken from a single letter — the one she wrote to her sister Marie of the Sacred Heart on 17 September 1896, when Marie asked whether she too could love God as Thérèse loved Him. The answer fits into nine pieces.

A carta nasce de uma pergunta da irmã dela: posso eu amar a Deus como tu o amas? Teresinha não responde com um método. Responde tirando do caminho aquilo que a irmã admirava nela — os grandes desejos — e dizendo que não é dali que vem a confiança.The letter begins with her sister's question: can I love God as you love Him? Thérèse does not answer with a method. She answers by clearing away the very thing her sister admired in her — the great desires — and saying that this is not where the confidence comes from.

Repare no adjetivo: esperança cega. Não é a esperança de quem já viu resultados. É a de quem não vê nada e continua a contar com a misericórdia — e ela chama a isso a única coisa que tem.Notice the adjective: blind hope. Not the hope of someone who has seen results. The hope of someone who sees nothing and goes on counting on mercy — and she calls that the only thing she owns.

É uma frase incômoda e ela sabe. Querer gostar de sofrer ainda é querer alguma coisa para si. O que ela propõe é mais seco: sofrer sem o consolo de achar bonito sofrer.It is an uncomfortable line and she knows it. Wanting to enjoy suffering is still wanting something for oneself. What she proposes is drier: to suffer without the consolation of finding suffering beautiful.

Aqui a lógica inverte-se por completo. A fraqueza deixa de ser o obstáculo ao amor de Deus e passa a ser a condição dele. Não é resignação: é o lugar onde esse amor tem espaço para agir.Here the logic turns over completely. Weakness stops being the obstacle to God's love and becomes its condition. This is not resignation: it is the place where that love has room to work.

«Amar não sentir nada» é a frase mais estranha da carta e a mais útil. Ela não promete que a aridez acaba. Promete que é exatamente ali que Ele vem buscar — por mais longe que estejamos.“To love to feel nothing” is the strangest line in the letter and the most useful. She does not promise the dryness ends. She promises that this is exactly where He comes to fetch us — however far off we are.

As maiúsculas são dela, na carta. E o argumento é para guardar: o próprio desejo já é sinal de que a coisa desejada está prometida, «porque Deus nunca dá desejos que não possa realizar».The capitals are hers, in the letter. And the argument is worth keeping: the desire itself is already the sign that the thing desired is promised — “for God never gives desires He cannot fulfil”.

A carta acaba porque tocou a hora do silêncio no Carmelo. Ela larga a pena a meio do que queria dizer — e entrega o resto a Jesus. É um bom modo de acabar uma novena: o que ficou por pedir, Ele sabe.The letter ends because the hour of silence had struck in the Carmel. She puts down the pen in the middle of what she wanted to say — and hands the rest to Jesus. It is a good way to end a novena: what was left unasked, He knows.

Ó Santa Teresinha do Menino Jesus, que prometestes passar o vosso céu fazendo o bem na terra e fazer cair uma chuva de rosas: lembrai-vos dessa promessa e alcançai-me de Deus as graças que espero da sua infinita bondade.
O Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, who promised to spend your heaven doing good upon earth and to let fall a shower of roses: remember that promise, and obtain for me from God the graces I hope for from His infinite goodness.
