Prayer to Saint Joseph — Ad te, beate Ioseph

Written for the end of the Rosary in October

LatinEnglish

To thee, O blessed Joseph, we fly in our tribulation, and, having implored the help of thy most holy Spouse, we confidently ask thy patronage also.
By that charity which bound thee to the immaculate Virgin Mother of God, and by the fatherly love with which thou didst embrace the Child Jesus, we humbly beseech thee to look graciously upon the inheritance which Jesus Christ purchased by his Blood, and to help us in our needs by thy power and aid.
O most provident guardian of the divine Family, protect the chosen offspring of Jesus Christ; O most loving father, keep far from us every plague of error and corruption; O our most mighty protector, be favourable to us and assist us from heaven in this struggle with the powers of darkness; and as once thou didst rescue the Child Jesus from deadly peril, so now defend the holy Church of God from the snares of her enemies and from all adversity.
Shield each one of us with thy constant protection, so that, following thy example and upheld by thy help, we may live holily, die devoutly, and attain everlasting happiness in heaven.

Amen.

The history of this prayer

Pope Leo XIII wrote this prayer in 1889 and sent it to the bishops together with his encyclical Quamquam pluries, of 15 August that year, on devotion to Saint Joseph. It was a time of fierce attacks on the Church, and the Pope, recalling that Pius IX had proclaimed Saint Joseph Patron of the Universal Church in 1870, asked the whole Christian people to have recourse to him.

Leo XIII directed that in October the prayer be added at the end of the Rosary; many still pray it after the Rosary, especially in October, on Wednesdays (the day traditionally dedicated to Saint Joseph) and in March, the month of Saint Joseph. The Enchiridion of Indulgences attaches a partial indulgence to it.

The prayer asks three things of Saint Joseph, guardian of the Holy Family: protection for the Church, defence against error and the powers of darkness, and the grace of a holy life and a good death — which is why he is also invoked as patron of a happy death.
