Gratia Plena

No decorrer do meu apostolado na Legião de Maria — o que chamamos de “tarefa” semanal — eu estava em uma chamada banca, em frente à igreja Católica mais antiga da cidade de Belfast (St Mary’s Chapel Lane), aqui na Irlanda do Norte.

É notória a presença de ateus, católicos afastados, pessoas de outras religiões e também protestantes que passam por ali. O que mais me surpreende, na maioria das vezes, é a arrogância com que os protestantes se aproximam dos católicos, julgando que vão encontrar pessoas que estão na Igreja apenas por tradição.

During my apostolate with the Legion of Mary — what we call our weekly “duty” — I was at a praesidium stand, in front of the oldest Catholic church in the city of Belfast (St Mary’s Chapel Lane), here in Northern Ireland.

The presence of atheists, lapsed Catholics, people of other religions and also Protestants who pass by is well known. What surprises me most, more often than not, is the arrogance with which Protestants approach Catholics, expecting to find people who are in the Church merely out of tradition.

Foi em um desses dias que um homem se aproximou de onde estávamos, diante da bela imagem da Legião de Maria, e começou a apontar o dedo para algumas pessoas que estavam conosco. Ele começou dizendo:

— “Isto é um absurdo… Só Jesus salva… Não há necessidade de Maria, ela foi uma mulher normal, nada de especial, como você e eu que fomos escolhidos por Deus… Agora ela está morta…”

E todas aquelas frases de impacto sem sentido que eles aprendem em seus templos.

It was on one of those days that a man came up to where we stood, in front of the beautiful image of the Legion of Mary, and began pointing his finger at some of the people who were with us. He began by saying:

— “This is absurd… Only Jesus saves… There is no need for Mary, she was a normal woman, nothing special, like you and me who were chosen by God… Now she is dead…”

And all those impact-phrases without meaning that they learn in their temples.

Pela graça de Deus eu estava ali e pude defender a fé que recebemos por esta santa e maravilhosa tradição da Igreja Católica. Não devemos ter medo deles!

“Antes, santificai Cristo, o Senhor, em vossos corações, estando sempre prontos para responder, com mansidão e respeito, a todo aquele que vos pedir a razão da esperança que há em vós.” (1Pd 3,15)

Devemos ser mais como São Paulo e permitir que Deus aja e fale por meio de nós, da maneira que Ele quiser.

By the grace of God I was there, and I was able to defend the faith we have received through this holy and marvellous tradition of the Catholic Church. We must not be afraid of them!

“But sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, being always ready to give an answer, with meekness and respect, to anyone who asks you the reason for the hope that is within you.” (1 Pet 3:15)

We should be more like St Paul and let God act and speak through us, in whatever way He wishes.
