The history of this prayer

The Litany of Saint Joseph was approved for public use throughout the Church by Saint Pius X in 1909. It runs through the life and virtues of Mary's spouse: son of David, guardian of the Virgin, foster-father of Jesus, model of workmen, patron of the dying and protector of the Church.

During the Year of Saint Joseph, opened by the letter Patris corde (8 December 2020), Pope Francis approved seven new invocations, published by the Congregation for Divine Worship on 1 May 2021: Guardian of the Redeemer, Servant of Christ, Minister of salvation, Support in difficulties, Patron of exiles, Patron of the afflicted and Patron of the poor. They are drawn from texts on Saint Joseph cited by the popes: Saint John Paul II's exhortation Redemptoris custos (1989), a homily of Saint Paul VI, Saint John Chrysostom and Patris corde itself.

It is prayed especially in March, the month of Saint Joseph, on Wednesdays, and on his feasts of 19 March and 1 May. Like the other approved litanies, it carries a partial indulgence. In Church Latin, "Ioseph" is pronounced YO-sef.
