On 25 March 1858, at the grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, Bernadette Soubirous asked once more the name of the Lady she saw. The answer came in the local dialect: “Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou”, “I am the Immaculate Conception”. Bernadette did not know what it meant, and kept repeating the words all the way to the parish priest. Just over three years earlier, on 8 December 1854, Pope Pius IX had defined that truth as a dogma of faith.
This novena is prayed from 29 November to 7 December, the nine days before the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December. In 2026 the first day falls on the First Sunday of Advent, so the novena walks alongside the beginning of the road to Christmas. What the Church celebrates here is not a virtue of Mary but a gift of God: from the first instant of her existence she was preserved from original sin, in view of the merits of Christ. The prayer is the same on all nine days and is at the foot of the page.
What changes each day is the word that goes with the prayer. The first five days walk through the Scripture the Church has read in the light of this mystery: the promise in Genesis, the choosing “before the foundation of the world”, the angel’s greeting, the Song of Songs and the Magnificat. The next three tell how the Church came to say it in so many words: the Medal of 1830, the definition of 1854 and Lourdes. The last day returns to the “yes” of Nazareth.

I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel. Livro do Gênesis 3,15Book of Genesis 3:15
The first good news in the Bible comes straight after the first fall. God is still speaking to the serpent, and already he announces an enmity: there will be a woman, and a seed of hers, that will not be on the side of evil. The Fathers of the Church read here the Redeemer and his Mother, and the Church proclaims this passage at Mass on 8 December. Begin the novena with this promise: sin did not have the last word, not even at the beginning. Ask today for the grace not to make peace with the evil that is in you.
Dia 2 — 30 de novembroDay 2 — 30 November · Escolhida antes de tudoChosen before all things
As he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and unspotted in his sight in charity. Carta de São Paulo aos Efésios 1,4Letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians 1:4
Saint Paul is speaking of all of us: God chose us before we existed, to be holy and unspotted. In Mary that plan was fulfilled entirely and from the very start. The bull of 1854 says that God, “from the beginning and before the ages”, chose and destined a Mother for his Son. What was given to her in the first instant is, in us, the work of a whole life, and it begins at Baptism. Give thanks today for having been chosen, and ask for the grace to answer that choice.
And the angel being come in, said unto her: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. Evangelho de São Lucas 1,28Gospel of Luke 1:28
Hoje, reze devagar a Ave-Maria do fim da oração, parando em «cheia de graça».The angel does not call Mary by her name. He calls her “full of grace”, as if that were her name. The Second Vatican Council says she was “adorned from the first instant of her conception with the radiance of an entirely unique holiness” (Lumen Gentium, 56). There was no corner of her closed to God. It is the greeting we repeat in every Hail Mary, so often without thinking. Today, pray the Hail Mary at the end of the prayer slowly, pausing on “full of grace”.
Thou art all fair, O my love, and there is not a spot in thee. Cântico dos Cânticos 4,7Song of Songs 4:7
The verse is a love poem, and the Church applied it to Mary in an ancient antiphon, the Tota pulchra es, which you pray at the end of the prayer. The feast of Mary’s Conception is old: it was born in the monasteries of Palestine around the year 700, and in the West it first appears with certainty in England, in calendars from Winchester of about 1030. At first it was the conception itself that was celebrated; the Church took centuries to say precisely that it was without stain. Ask today for clean eyes, able to see the beauty of what God does.
Dia 5 — 3 de dezembroDay 5 — 3 December · Deus, meu SalvadorGod my Saviour
A minha alma engrandece o Senhor, e o meu espírito exultou em Deus, meu Salvador. My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Evangelho de São Lucas 1,46-47Gospel of Luke 1:46-47
If Mary never had sin, why does she call God her Saviour? Because she too was saved, and in the most complete way: she was not lifted out of the fall, she was kept from falling. The definition of 1854 says so precisely: preserved “in view of the merits of Jesus Christ”. The Immaculate is not an exception to the Redemption; she is its masterpiece. That is why she sings. Give thanks today for the times God kept you from an evil you never even came to know.
Dia 6 — 4 de dezembroDay 6 — 4 December · Concebida sem pecadoConceived without sin
Ó Maria concebida sem pecado, rogai por nós que recorremos a vós.O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Inscrição da Medalha Milagrosa, Paris, 1830Inscription of the Miraculous Medal, Paris, 1830
On 27 November 1830, in the chapel of the Daughters of Charity in the Rue du Bac in Paris, the novice Catherine Labouré saw the Virgin within an oval frame bearing these words in golden letters, and was asked to have a medal struck. The medal went around the world, and the prayer with it. Twenty-four years before the dogma, ordinary people were already praying “conceived without sin”. Pray this line several times today, in the ordinary hours.
We declare, pronounce and define that the doctrine which holds that the most blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege of almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the human race, was preserved immune from every stain of original guilt, is revealed by God.
Pius IX did not decide alone. On 2 February 1849, from Gaeta, he wrote to the bishops of the whole world asking them to pray and to tell him in writing what they thought and what their people believed. Only afterwards, on 8 December 1854, did he proclaim the definition. The Church did not invent the truth that day: she recognised with authority what the faith of the faithful already kept. Pray today for the Church and for the Pope, that they may keep the faith and teach it clearly.
Dia 8 — 6 de dezembroDay 8 — 6 December · O nome que ela disseThe name she gave
Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou. («Eu sou a Imaculada Conceição.»)Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou. (“I am the Immaculate Conception.”) Palavras da Senhora a Bernadette, Lourdes, 25 de março de 1858Words of the Lady to Bernadette, Lourdes, 25 March 1858
Peça hoje a graça de também deixar que Deus diga quem você é.It was the sixteenth apparition. The parish priest, Fr Peyramale, had sent Bernadette to ask the Lady’s name. She told afterwards how the Lady raised her eyes to heaven, joined her hands and answered in the local tongue. The Lady did not say “I was conceived without sin”: she said she was the Immaculate Conception, as if the gift were her name. Ask today for the grace to let God, too, say who you are.
Dia 9 — 7 de dezembroDay 9 — 7 December · Faça-se em mimBe it done to me
Disse então Maria: Eis aqui a serva do Senhor; faça-se em mim segundo a tua palavra. And Mary said: Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word. Evangelho de São Lucas 1,38Gospel of Luke 1:38
Amanhã é a festa. Como no primeiro dia, a novena termina numa promessa, agora cumprida: a mulher anunciada no Gênesis responde. Entregue hoje a Deus aquilo que você ainda guarda só para si.What was the Immaculate Conception for? For this moment. God prepared a freedom with nothing binding it, so that she could say “yes” entirely, with nothing divided within. Grace did not make her less free; it made her wholly free. Tomorrow is the feast. As on the first day, the novena ends with a promise, now kept: the woman foretold in Genesis gives her answer. Hand over to God today what you still keep only for yourself.

À Imaculada ConceiçãoTo the Immaculate Conception
Virgin Mary, full of grace, whom God chose before the foundation of the world and preserved from all sin from the first instant, in view of the merits of your Son: you are the promise fulfilled and the masterpiece of the Redemption. Look upon us, who know so well the weight of sin. Teach us to trust in the grace that kept you and that raises us up too. Obtain for us a clean heart, a simple faith and the freedom to say “yes” to God, as you said it in Nazareth. And bring to your Son what I entrust to you today.

Com as palavras da IgrejaIn the words of the Church
You are all fair, O Mary, and the original stain is not in you. You are the glory of Jerusalem, you the joy of Israel, you the honour of our people, you the advocate of sinners. O Mary, Virgin most prudent, Mother most clement, pray for us, intercede for us with our Lord Jesus Christ.

About the texts. The Scripture verses in English are from the Douay-Rheims (Challoner), in the public domain; in Portuguese they are my own translation from the Latin Vulgate. In Genesis 3:15 the Vulgate reads “she shall crush”, while the Hebrew reads “he” or “the seed”: the reading differs, the sense is the same, for it is through her seed, Christ, that the woman overcomes the serpent. The 1854 definition and the antiphon Tota pulchra es are my own translations from the Latin. The words at Lourdes are in the local tongue, as Bernadette reported them; the inscription of the Medal is given in its traditional form. The line from the Council (Lumen Gentium, 56) is quoted from the translation published by the Vatican. The prayer to the Immaculate was composed for this novena. The image is Francisco de Zurbarán’s Immaculate Conception (c. 1635, Museo del Prado), in the public domain.
