Natal do SenhorThe Nativity of the Lord
De 16 a 24 de dezembro — os nove dias que fecham na véspera do Natal do Senhor, 25 de dezembro.16 to 24 December — the nine days that close on Christmas Eve, the vigil of the Nativity of the Lord, 25 December.
Many Christians set up the crib at home long beforehand, but few think of preparing their hearts. The one who noticed it was Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, the Neapolitan who founded the Redemptorists in 1732, was Bishop of Sant’Agata dei Goti and is a Doctor of the Church. It comes at the start of a small book he wrote for the nine days before Christmas, published in 1758. One of the best-known Christmas carols in Italy, Tu scendi dalle stelle, first printed in 1755, is also his.
This novena is prayed from 16 to 24 December, and its last day is Christmas Eve. It is the time when Advent itself changes key: Advent looks both to Christ’s return at the end of time and to his birth, and from 17 to 24 December the liturgy turns more directly to preparing for Christmas. The prayer is the same on all nine days and is at the foot of the page. It can be prayed alone or as a family, in front of the crib.
What changes each day is the word that goes with the prayer. Saint Alphonsus wrote nine meditations, and each one dwells on a step of the same movement: the eternal Word, who was great, became little; who was Lord, became a servant; who was strong, became weak; who was rich, became poor. Nine descents, down to the cave at Bethlehem. Each day gives a line of his, translated from the Italian, or the passage of Scripture he chose, and a short text to pray with.

Dia 1 — 16 de dezembroDay 1 — 16 December · O fogo que ele veio trazerThe fire he came to bring
Many Christians are used to preparing the crib in their homes long beforehand, to represent the birth of Jesus Christ; but few are those who think of preparing their hearts, so that the Child Jesus may be born and find his rest in them. Santo Afonso Maria de Ligório, Novena do Santo Natal, discurso ISaint Alphonsus Liguori, Novena of Christmas, Discourse I
Saint Alphonsus opens the novena with words of Jesus: “I am come to cast fire on the earth; and what will I, but that it be kindled?” (Luke 12:49). And he suggests that Christmas be called “the day of fire”, the day on which God came as a child to kindle love in the hearts of men. That is why the eternal Word became man: to be loved. The crib in the front room is good and it helps. Today, before you look at it, keep a few minutes of silence and ask what room the Child will find in you.
Dia 2 — 17 de dezembroDay 2 — 17 December · Grande, fez-se pequenoGreat, he became little
This God, so good and so loving towards us, being great, and of infinite greatness, chose to make himself little in order to be loved by us. Santo Afonso Maria de Ligório, Novena do Santo Natal, discurso IISaint Alphonsus Liguori, Novena of Christmas, Discourse II
Alphonsus recalls an old proverb, which he says Saint John Chrysostom repeated: “If you wish to be loved, love.” There is no surer way to win someone’s heart than to love them and let them know they are loved. God kept that rule to the very end: the Infinite became a child, whom nobody is afraid to hold. From today, 17 December, the liturgy enters the days that prepare most closely for Christmas. Ask today for the grace to let yourself be loved, without first trying to deserve it.
But emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man. Carta de São Paulo aos Filipenses 2,7Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians 2:7
Alphonsus begins this day with the canticle of Zachary, which the Church prays every morning: God has visited his people so that, delivered from the hand of their enemies, “we may serve him without fear”. We were slaves of sin, he says, and to set us free the Lord of all became a servant. He whom the angels serve chose to depend on a mother and a carpenter. Do someone at home a hidden service today, expecting no thanks, and offer it to the Child.
Dia 4 — 19 de dezembroDay 4 — 19 December · Inocente, carregou a nossa culpaInnocent, he bore our guilt
Consolai-vos, consolai-vos, povo meu, diz o vosso Deus. Be comforted, be comforted, my people, saith your God. Speak ye to the heart of Jerusalem, and call to her: for her evil is come to an end, her iniquity is forgiven. Livro de Isaías 40,1-2Book of Isaiah 40:1-2
Before the Redeemer came, writes Alphonsus, man’s case was “desperate”: the offence was against God, and no creature could make it good. So God himself found the way. The Son became man, took on the likeness of a sinner and laid on his own shoulders a debt that was not his. That is why Isaiah can say “be comforted”. The Child in the crib comes already to carry our guilt. If you can, go to confession today or in the days ahead, so as to reach Christmas with a lightened heart.
He who was strong and almighty became weak. He took our weakness upon himself, and so gave us a share in his strength. Santo Afonso Maria de Ligório, Novena do Santo Natal, discurso VSaint Alphonsus Liguori, Novena of Christmas, Discourse V
This discourse begins with Isaiah: “Say to the fainthearted: Take courage, and fear not (…) God himself will come and will save you” (Isaiah 35:4). And Alphonsus cries out: “Rejoice, children of Adam, be faint-hearted no more!” The God who holds up the world is born unable to hold up his own head. He did not come to remove our weakness from a distance, but to enter into it. Tell the Child today, plainly and by name, the weakness that shames you most, and ask for his strength.
Dia 6 — 21 de dezembroDay 6 — 21 December · Dele, fez-se nossoHis own, he became ours
The kings of the earth glory in their dominion over kingdoms and riches: Jesus Christ is content with the kingdom of our hearts. Santo Afonso Maria de Ligório, Novena do Santo Natal, discurso VISaint Alphonsus Liguori, Novena of Christmas, Discourse VI
Alphonsus opens this day before Herod, who is afraid of losing his throne. Do not fear, he answers him with Saint Fulgentius: this King did not come to conquer kings by fighting, but to win them by dying. The verse for the day is from Isaiah: “A child is born to us, and a son is given to us” (Isaiah 9:6). Given: with Saint Thomas, Alphonsus says that once God has given himself, he has nothing more left to give us. And all he asks in return is the heart. Ask yourself today what you still keep out of his reach.
To teach us by his example the mortification of the senses, which overcomes the love of pleasures, from blessed he became afflicted; to teach us detachment from the goods of this earth, from rich he became poor; and to teach us humility, which overcomes the love of honours, from exalted he became humble. Santo Afonso Maria de Ligório, Novena do Santo Natal, discurso VIISaint Alphonsus Liguori, Novena of Christmas, Discourse VII
Saint John speaks of three disordered loves: the concupiscence of the flesh, that of the eyes, and the pride of life (1 John 2:16). Saint Alphonsus gives the last three days of the novena to them, and today he begins with the first. He who has been blessed from all eternity chose to be born in the cold of a cave, as the prayer at the end of this page sings. Not to say that suffering is good in itself, but to teach us to be free. Offer today a small, hidden self-denial for someone who is suffering.
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that being rich he became poor, for your sakes; that through his poverty you might be rich. Segunda Carta de São Paulo aos Coríntios 8,9Second Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians 8:9
All that is in heaven and on earth is God’s, Alphonsus reminds us with the psalm: “The world is mine, and the fulness thereof” (Psalm 49:12). And this God, so rich, became poor. Why? Because the goods of the earth, says the saint, blind people so that they can no longer see which goods are the true ones. In the last days before Christmas, when everything invites you to buy, look at the manger. Give something of your own today to someone in need, preferably something you will miss.
What! A God in a stable! A God on straw! That God who sits on the highest throne of heaven, where do we see him now? In a manger, unknown and forsaken, with only two animals and a few poor shepherds around him! Santo Afonso Maria de Ligório, Novena do Santo Natal, discurso IXSaint Alphonsus Liguori, Novena of Christmas, Discourse IX
É a véspera do Natal. It is Christmas Eve. Alphonsus invites us to go to Bethlehem with words he attributes to Saint Bernard: there we have something to wonder at, something to love and something to imitate. To wonder at a God so high, lying so low. To love the one who became little in order to be loved. To imitate the one who, before he can speak, already teaches in the cave what he will say later: “Learn of me, because I am meek and humble of heart” (Matthew 11:29). Tonight, at the Christmas Mass, kneel before him. And give him the heart you have prepared over these nine days.

Ao Menino JesusTo the Child Jesus
Lord Jesus, eternal Word of the Father, who being great became little, being Lord became a servant, being rich became poor for love of us: we are waiting for you. Prepare our hearts yourself, as Mary and Joseph made ready the cave at Bethlehem. Take from them whatever keeps you out, kindle in them the fire you came to bring on the earth, and teach us to be little, so that we may find you in the manger. Bless our home and our family this Christmas, and receive what I entrust to you today.

Com as palavras de Santo AfonsoIn the words of Saint Alphonsus
Ó meu Menino divino, eu te vejo aqui tremendo. Ó Deus bendito! Ai, quanto te custou ter-me amado!
You come down from the stars, O King of heaven, and come to a cave, in the cold and the frost. O my divine Child, I see you trembling here. O blessed God! Ah, how much it cost you to have loved me!
You who are the Creator of the world had neither clothing nor fire, O my Lord. Dear little chosen one, how much more this poverty makes me love you, since love made you poor as well.
