The history of this prayer

In 1916, a year before Our Lady's apparitions, the three shepherd children of Fatima — Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta — saw an Angel three times; he called himself “the Angel of Peace” and “the Angel of Portugal”. The first time, at the Loca do Cabeço, he knelt with his forehead to the ground and had them repeat three times: “My God, I believe, I adore, I hope and I love thee…”. The third time he came holding a chalice with a Host above it; leaving them suspended in the air, he prostrated himself, taught them the prayer to the Most Holy Trinity, and then gave them Holy Communion.

On 13 July 1917 Our Lady asked that, when praying the Rosary, they say after each mystery: “O my Jesus, forgive us…”, and taught them to offer their sacrifices with the prayer “O Jesus, it is for love of thee…”. The texts come from Sister Lúcia's Memoirs; the “Original” column gives the Portuguese wording published by the Shrine of Fatima, and the English column a faithful rendering.

The Fatima apparitions were declared worthy of belief by the Bishop of Leiria in 1930. Francisco and Jacinta were canonized by Pope Francis on 13 May 2017.

No. They were taught in Portuguese, and the reference text is the one in Sister Lúcia's Memoirs.
