Sagrado Coração de JesusThe Sacred Heart of Jesus
May to 3 June 2027 — the nine days that close on the eve of the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Friday 4 June. The date moves each year: it is always the Friday after the second Sunday after Pentecost.
For 11 June 1899, Leo XIII ordained that the same formula be prayed in the principal church of every town and village: the consecration of the human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Pope explained why: in the Heart of Christ there is the symbol and express image of his infinite love, which moves us to love one another. Today, more than three centuries after Paray-le-Monial, that is still the reason for praying to him.
This novena is prayed from 26 May to 3 June 2027, the nine days before the solemnity, which this year falls on Friday 4 June. The date moves each year, because it depends on Easter: it is the Friday after the second Sunday after Pentecost. The prayer is the same on all nine days and is at the foot of the page, with the consecration that Saint Margaret Mary herself wrote.
The nine days go from the promise to the response. They begin with the everlasting love of which Jeremiah speaks and the meek and humble Heart of the Gospel, pass through the Supper and the side opened on the Cross, stop at Paray-le-Monial, with the apparitions and the promises, and end with what two Popes wrote about this devotion: Pius XI, on reparation, and Pius XII, on the love of which the Heart is the sign.

Dia 1 — 26 de maioDay 1 — 26 May · O amor que vem de longeThe love that comes from afar
De longe o Senhor me apareceu: Com amor eterno te amei; por isso te atraí a mim, compadecendo-me de ti.The Lord hath appeared from afar to me. Yea I have loved thee with an everlasting love, therefore have I drawn thee, taking pity on thee.
Devotion to the Sacred Heart does not begin in the seventeenth century. Pius XII acknowledges that Scripture does not clearly point to the heart of Christ as the symbol of his love, yet it is full of God's love for his people; among the passages he quotes is this one: God speaks to an exiled people who thought themselves forgotten, and says that he loved them first, and for ever. Begin the novena here: before asking, let yourself be reminded that you are already loved.
Dia 2 — 27 de maioDay 2 — 27 May · Manso e humilde de coraçãoMeek and humble of heart
Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls.
It is the only time in the Gospels that Jesus speaks expressly of his own heart, and what he says is not that it is strong or great, but meek and humble. He does not ask us to admire him from a distance: he asks us to learn from him. That is why the aspiration that closes the prayer of this novena asks that our heart be made like his. Pray today for a concrete meekness: with whom, at home or at work, do you need to be gentler?
Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.
On the night of the Supper, the night on which he gave his Body and Blood, Jesus let John rest against his breast. Saint Margaret Mary received the first of the great graces on a feast of Saint John, 27 December 1673, the date most historians accept, and wrote afterwards that the Lord made her rest a long while upon his breast. Today, receive Communion if you can, and stay a few minutes in silence afterwards, like someone at rest.
Dia 4 — 29 de maioDay 4 — 29 May · Olharão para aquele que traspassaramThey shall look on him whom they pierced
But one of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water. […] And again another scripture saith: They shall look on him whom they pierced.
Pius XII observes that the lance, which the soldier drove in to make sure of death, certainly reached the Heart. Since the Fathers of the Church, Christians have seen the sacraments in the blood and water that came from the opened side, and the birth of the Church in the opened side itself. Devotion to the Sacred Heart has its ground here: not in a pretty picture, but in a wound. Pray today before a crucifix, looking at the wounded side.
Dia 5 — 30 de maioDay 5 — 30 May · As fontes do SalvadorThe Saviour's fountains
Rightly and deservedly is the Heart of the Incarnate Word held to be the chief sign and symbol of that threefold love with which the divine Redeemer unceasingly loves the eternal Father and all mankind. Pio XII, encíclica Haurietis aquas (1956), n. 54 (tradução própria do latim)Pius XII, encyclical Haurietis aquas (1956), n. 54 (own translation from the Latin)
In 1956, a hundred years after Pius IX extended the feast to the whole Church, Pius XII devoted a whole encyclical to this devotion. He opened it with Isaiah: "You shall draw waters with joy out of the saviour's fountains." The threefold love he speaks of is the divine love of the Word, the love of his human soul and the felt love of his heart of flesh. Today, ask for the grace to drink from those fountains without fear, with joy, and not out of duty.
Dia 6 — 31 de maioDay 6 — 31 May · Eis este CoraçãoBehold this Heart
Behold this Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming itself, to show them its love. Santa Margarida Maria, Autobiografia, relato da grande aparição de junho de 1675 (palavras de Cristo, como ela as refere; tradução própria do francês)Saint Margaret Mary, Autobiography, account of the great apparition of June 1675 (words of Christ, as she reports them; own translation from the French)
At Paray-le-Monial, on a day within the octave of Corpus Christi in 1675, between 13 and 20 June (the exact day is not known), the young Visitation nun heard these words, followed by a complaint: from most men he received only ingratitude and coldness, above all in the Blessed Sacrament. Pius XII writes that those revelations brought nothing new into Catholic doctrine: they were an invitation to look upon God's merciful love. Today, make a visit to the Blessed Sacrament, even a short one.
I promise you, in the excessive mercy of my Heart, that its all-powerful love will grant to all who receive Communion on nine first Fridays of the month in a row the grace of final penitence. Santa Margarida Maria, carta 87 (palavras de Cristo, como ela as refere, «se ela não se engana»; tradução própria do francês)Saint Margaret Mary, letter 87 (words of Christ, as she reports them, "if she is not mistaken"; own translation from the French)
The promises of the Sacred Heart are scattered through her letters and her autobiography; the lists found on holy cards were put together later, and in 1882 a Christian of Dayton, in the United States, had them translated into some two hundred languages and printed on a holy picture. She herself writes humbly: "if she is not mistaken". The promise is not a magic formula; it is an invitation to faithfulness, to confession and to a Communion well made. If you have not yet begun the first Fridays, decide today when you will begin.
Dia 8 — 2 de junhoDay 8 — 2 June · Quem me consolasseOne that would comfort me
My heart hath expected reproach and misery. And I looked for one that would grieve together with me, but there was none: and for one that would comfort me, and I found none.
In 1928 Pius XI wrote the encyclical Miserentissimus Redemptor on the reparation owed to the Sacred Heart, and quoted this psalm, which the liturgy places on the lips of Christ. He asked: how can Christ, who already reigns in heaven, be comforted? And he answered with Saint Augustine: "give me one who loves, and he feels what I say". It was for this that the Communion of reparation and the Holy Hour were asked for at Paray. Today, offer an hour, or part of one, to keep him company.
Dia 9 — 3 de junhoDay 9 — 3 June · A véspera: a suma de toda a religiãoThe eve: the sum of all religion
For does not that most auspicious sign, with the form of devotion that flows from it, hold within it the whole of religion in sum, and indeed the rule of a more perfect life? Pio XI, encíclica Miserentissimus Redemptor (1928), n. 3 (tradução própria do latim)Pius XI, encyclical Miserentissimus Redemptor (1928), n. 3 (own translation from the Latin)
Amanhã é a festa. Tomorrow is the feast. Pius XI explains his question: this devotion leads us to know Christ more closely, to love him more ardently and to imitate him better. Saint Margaret Mary wrote in a letter that, as it seemed to her, there is no shorter way to perfection, nor surer means of salvation, than to be wholly consecrated to this divine Heart. Today, pray in her words the consecration just below, and let tomorrow's feast find you wholly his.

Ao Sagrado Coração de JesusTo the Sacred Heart of Jesus
Vós dissestes: «Vinde a mim», e eu venho.
Sacred Heart of Jesus, opened by the lance and fountain of all grace, who have so loved men and receive so little love in return: I adore you, I thank you, and I ask your pardon for my coldness and for that of those who do not know you. You said, "Come to me", and I come. Receive what I bring you in these nine days and, if it is for your glory and the good of my soul, grant me the grace I ask of you:

Com as palavras de Santa Margarida MariaIn the words of Saint Margaret Mary
I, N., give and consecrate myself to the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ, my person and my life, my actions, pains and sufferings, no longer wishing to use any part of my being except to honour, love and glorify him. This is my irrevocable will: to be wholly his, and to do everything for love of him.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make our hearts like unto thine. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you. Saint Margaret Mary, pray for us.
Em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amém.
Amen.
About the texts. Scripture follows the Vulgate, in my own Portuguese rendering in the spirit of Figueiredo, and the English is the Douay-Rheims. The words of Pius XI (Miserentissimus Redemptor, 1928) and Pius XII (Haurietis aquas, 1956) are my own translations from the Latin text published by the Vatican. The words of Saint Margaret Mary, and those she reports having heard from Christ, are my own translations from the French, from old public-domain editions (Vie et révélations, Paris, 1920, and Recueil des écrits, 1865); I did not copy any modern translation. The prayer to the Sacred Heart was composed for this novena; the consecration is hers, and the other prayers are the traditional ones. Of the promises, I quote only that of the nine first Fridays, in the wording of the letter, and not the shortened list on holy cards. The image is a printed reproduction of Pompeo Batoni's Sacred Heart (1767), in the Church of the Gesù in Rome (its colours and light differ somewhat from the painting), in a photograph released into the public domain (CC0) on Wikimedia Commons.
