NovenaNovena
Santa Margarida Maria AlacoqueSaint Margaret Mary Alacoque
On 27 December 1673, the feast of Saint John the Evangelist, a Visitation nun of twenty-six, with no distinction in the eyes of her community, knelt before the Blessed Sacrament at Paray-le-Monial and afterwards said that she had been allowed to rest her head on the Lord's breast. Over the next two years there came from that moment a devotion that the whole Church would end up praying.
This novena is prayed on the nine days before her feast, 16 October; she died on 17 October 1690. The prayer is the same on all nine days, and it is at the foot of the page: an act of reparation to the Sacred Heart, composed for this novena, and the words of the consecration she herself wrote.
What changes is the company. The nine days follow her life: the sick girl, the apparitions of 1673 to 1675 and what each one asked, the cross of being misunderstood, her death and her canonisation. The sentences are hers (or what she reported having heard) and Scripture's, never from an internet collection of quotations.

Dia 1 — 7 de outubroDay 1 — 7 October · A menina que ficou de camaThe girl who was confined to bed
Come to me, all you that labour, and are burdened, and I will refresh you. Take up my yoke upon you, and learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart: and you shall find rest to your souls. For my yoke is sweet and my burden light.
She lost her father at eight and the family fell into poverty; a long illness kept her in bed for four years. It is said that she promised the Virgin she would be a religious if she recovered, and she recovered. The novena begins in this frailty: the sentence is addressed to whoever is tired of themselves, to whoever carries something they do not know how to set down. Pray today for what is weighing on you, without dressing it up.
My divine Heart is so passionate with love for men, and for you in particular, that, no longer able to contain within itself the flames of its ardent charity, it must pour them out through you. Santa Margarida Maria, Autobiografia, relato de 27 de dezembro de 1673 (palavras de Cristo, como ela as refere; tradução própria do francês)Saint Margaret Mary, Autobiography, account of 27 December 1673 (words of Christ, as she reports them; own translation from the French)
Margaret had entered the Visitation in 1671 and made her profession in 1672. It was on the feast of Saint John, the disciple who rested his head on Jesus's breast at the Supper, that she says she received the first of these graces. The most striking thing is what follows "for you in particular": the fire is not hers to keep, it is hers to pour out. Today, ask for the grace not to keep to yourself whatever good God has entrusted to you.
One of the soldiers with a spear opened his side, and immediately there came out blood and water.
In the apparitions that followed, Margaret describes the Heart of Jesus ringed with a crown of thorns and surmounted by a cross, with an open wound. She did not invent a new image: she set before the eyes what John saw on Calvary and gave us to see in Scripture. The devotion to the Sacred Heart has its ground here: the wound in Christ's side, from which Christian tradition has always seen the sacraments flow. Pray today before a crucifix, if you can.
Dia 4 — 10 de outubroDay 4 — 10 October · O Coração que tanto amou os homensThe Heart that has so loved men
Behold this Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming itself, to show them its love. Santa Margarida Maria, Autobiografia, relato da grande aparição de junho de 1675 (tradução própria do francês)Saint Margaret Mary, Autobiography, account of the great apparition of June 1675 (own translation from the French)
Primeiro pedido: a adoração. It is the best known of the four apparitions, within the octave of Corpus Christi in 1675; the sources differ on the exact day, between 13 and 20 June. She reports that the Lord, showing the Heart, complained that from most men he received ingratitude and coldness, above all before the Blessed Sacrament. The first request: adoration. Today, pray for a few minutes before the Blessed Sacrament, in a church or at home, simply to be present.
Dia 5 — 11 de outubroDay 5 — 11 October · Um coração novoA new heart
And I will give you a new heart, and put a new spirit within you: and I will take away the stone heart out of your flesh, and will give you a heart of flesh.
The second request, in the apparitions, was Communion of reparation, especially on the first Friday of the month. A word of caution: the so-called "great promise" and the "twelve promises" belong to devotional tradition, and their origin is debated among historians; they should not be read as an automatic formula of salvation. What is safe is the invitation: to receive Communion wishing to console the Heart of Christ and to have one's own heart changed.
Dia 6 — 12 de outubroDay 6 — 12 October · Uma hora de vigíliaOne hour's watching
Então não pudestes vigiar uma hora comigo?Could you not watch one hour with me?
The third request was the Holy Hour: an hour of watching on Thursday night into Friday, in union with Jesus's agony in Gethsemane. It is said that the superior refused the request, and that in the community they treated her as someone deluded. Pray your hour today, if you can, or only fifteen minutes: it is not to feel something, it is to stay awake beside him.
Consume in me all that can displease You or resist You. Santa Margarida Maria, Consagração ao Sagrado Coração (tradução própria do francês)Saint Margaret Mary, Consecration to the Sacred Heart (own translation from the French)
The request for the feast, in honour of the Heart of Jesus, on the Friday after the octave of Corpus Christi, completes the apparitions. But for years her community doubted her. Support came from Saint Claude de la Colombière, a Jesuit, who reached Paray in February 1675, defended her and, on 21 June 1675, consecrated himself to the Heart of Christ. In 1683 the opposition gave way. Today, pray for someone you know who carries a cross without being understood.
Dia 8 — 14 de outubroDay 8 — 14 October · Morrer em seu CoraçãoTo die in his Heart
…o meu asilo seguro na hora da minha morte.…my sure refuge at the hour of my death. Santa Margarida Maria, Consagração ao Sagrado Coração (tradução própria do francês)Saint Margaret Mary, Consecration to the Sacred Heart (own translation from the French)
She died on 17 October 1690 at Paray-le-Monial, aged forty-three, without seeing the feast established in the Church. She was beatified by Pius IX in 1864 and canonised by Benedict XV on 13 May 1920. The feast of the Sacred Heart was extended to the whole Latin Church by Pius IX in 1856. Pray today for the dying, and for yourself, at your hour.
Dia 9 — 15 de outubroDay 9 — 15 October · A véspera: a largura, o comprimento, a altura e a profundidadeThe eve: breadth, length, height and depth
That Christ may dwell by faith in your hearts; that being rooted and founded in charity, you may be able to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth, and length, and height, and depth; to know also the charity of Christ, which surpasseth all knowledge, that you may be filled unto all the fulness of God. Efésios 3,17-19 (versão própria, fiel à Vulgata)Ephesians 3:17-19 (Douay-Rheims)
Amanhã a Igreja faz memória dela. Tomorrow the Church keeps her memorial. The prayer of the liturgy asks, in Latin, for the same spirit with which God enriched Margaret Mary, that we may know the charity of Christ which surpasses all knowledge: they are Paul's words, the ones above. Today, consecrate yourself with her own words, just below, and let tomorrow find you ready to be wholly his.

A Santa Margarida MariaTo Saint Margaret Mary
Saint Margaret Mary, who knelt before the Blessed Sacrament and heard that the Heart of Jesus has so loved men, teach me not to leave that love unanswered. You were misunderstood in your own house and did not cease to love; win for me the patience of one who carries a cross in silence. Ask the Heart of Jesus for me.

Ato de reparação ao Sagrado CoraçãoAct of reparation to the Sacred Heart
Heart of Jesus, wounded for love, I adore you present in the Blessed Sacrament. For those who do not love you, for those who forget you, and for my own coldness and haste, I ask your pardon. Receive my poor love in reparation, and make my heart like your own. Amen.
Com as palavras delaIn her own words
I, N., give and consecrate myself to the Sacred Heart of our Lord Jesus Christ, my person and my life, my actions, pains and sufferings, no longer wishing to use any part of my being except to honour, love and glorify him. This is my irrevocable will: to be wholly his, and to do everything for love of him.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

About the texts. About the texts. The sentences of Saint Margaret Mary come from the Autobiography and the Consecration, and were translated from the French by me from old public-domain editions (Vie et révélations, Paris, 1920, and Vie et Œuvres, 1867); I did not copy any modern translation. The words of Christ are those she reports having heard. Scripture follows the Vulgate, in my own Portuguese rendering in the spirit of Figueiredo, and the English is the Douay-Rheims. The act of reparation was composed for this novena; the other prayers are the traditional ones. The "great promise" and the "twelve promises" are left out: they are devotional tradition, of debated origin. The dates of the apparitions of 1675 vary by source.
