As Almas do PurgatórioThe Holy Souls in Purgatory
It is said that around the year 998 Abbot Odilo of Cluny asked that, in every monastery of his congregation, the day after the feast of All Saints be given to prayer for all the faithful who had died. The custom spread across Europe and entered the calendar of Rome: it is All Souls, 2 November, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed. A thousand years on, families still go to the cemeteries on that date, with flowers and candles.
This novena runs from 24 October to 1 November. The last day falls on All Saints, which in 2026 is a Sunday, and All Souls is on Monday the 2nd. To pray for the departed on the 1st does not contradict the liturgy: at Mass, the Sunday is All Saints and the celebration is that of the saints; the novena is private prayer, at home or beside a grave, and the Church that sings that day of those who have already reached heaven is the same Church that prays for those still on the way. The Church teaches that those who die in God's grace and friendship, but are not yet fully purified, undergo a purification to attain the holiness needed for the joy of heaven (Catechism, 1030–1031). She does not tell us who is in that state or for how long, and neither does this novena: it prays for all, and entrusts each one to the mercy of God.
The prayer is the same on all nine days; what changes is the company. Each day brings a passage of Scripture or of the liturgy for the dead and a short meditation. The first three days are about the hope of the resurrection; the next three, about what Scripture and the Church teach about praying for the dead; the last three, about God's mercy, the communion of saints and the Father's house where this novena ends.

And we will not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning them that are asleep, that you be not sorrowful, even as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died, and rose again; even so them who have slept through Jesus, will God bring with him. 1 Tessalonicenses 4,12-13 (4,13-14 nas edições atuais) — Figueiredo1 Thessalonians 4:12-13 (4:13-14 in current editions) — Douay-Rheims
Saint Paul does not forbid grief: he forbids grief without hope. Anyone who has lost someone knows that the two fit in the same heart. “Asleep” is the oldest word Christians use for the dead, because for them whoever sleeps in Christ will wake. Today, begin with a name: think of one person who has died and whom you loved, say the name aloud and hand them over to God. This novena is a way of not leaving that person alone.
Dia 2 — 25 de outubroDay 2 — 25 October · Eu sou a ressurreição e a vidaI am the resurrection and the life
Crês isto?I am the resurrection and the life: he that believeth in me, although he be dead, shall live: and every one that liveth, and believeth in me, shall not die for ever. Believest thou this?
It was said to a woman at her brother's tomb. Martha had already answered that she knew he would rise again on the last day; Jesus did not give her a doctrine, he gave her a person: “I am.” And soon after, the Gospel records the shortest verse of the Bible: Jesus wept (Jn 11:35). Christian hope does not promise that death will hurt less; it promises that death does not have the last word. Pray today for those who died without that hope, or without anyone having told it to them.
Dia 3 — 26 de outubroDay 3 — 26 October · Nas mãos de DeusIn the hand of God
But the souls of the just are in the hand of God, and the torment of death shall not touch them. In the sight of the unwise they seemed to die: and their departure was taken for misery: and their going away from us, for utter destruction: but they are in peace. Sabedoria 3,1-3 — FigueiredoWisdom 3:1-3 — Douay-Rheims
It is one of the readings most used at Christian funerals. The author writes to a people who saw the just die and concluded that God had forgotten them; and he answers with a simple image: a hand. Pray with that image today. Whoever has died is not lost anywhere; they are in the hands of Someone. There may still be road left to travel, but the hand is the same that made them, and the same that holds them now.
Dia 4 — 27 de outubroDay 4 — 27 October · Um pensamento santo e salutarA holy and wholesome thought
Sentindo bem e religiosamente da ressurreição. [...] Thinking well and religiously concerning the resurrection. [...] It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins. 2 Macabeus 12,43 e 46 — Figueiredo2 Maccabees 12:43 and 46 — Douay-Rheims
Judas Maccabeus, after a battle, sent a collection to Jerusalem so that a sacrifice might be offered for the soldiers who had fallen, and the author gives the reason: had he not hoped that the dead would rise, praying for them would have been vain. That is why the Church ties the two together, resurrection and prayer for the departed. The Catechism (no. 1032) cites this passage as witness that the practice comes from Scripture itself. The books of Maccabees are deuterocanonical: the Catholic Church receives them as inspired; Protestant Bibles do not include them.
Dia 5 — 28 de outubroDay 5 — 28 October · Como através do fogoYet so as by fire
Every man's work shall be manifest; for the day of the Lord shall declare it, because it shall be revealed in fire; and the fire shall try every man's work, of what sort it is. [...] If any man's work burn, he shall suffer loss; but he himself shall be saved, yet so as by fire. 1 Coríntios 3,13 e 15 — Figueiredo1 Corinthians 3:13 and 15 — Douay-Rheims
Paul speaks of those who build on the foundation that is Christ. Over the centuries many have read in these words an image of what the Catechism calls the final purification of the elect, “entirely different from the punishment of the damned” (no. 1031). The image is of someone who is saved, but with loss, like one who walks out of a burning house. There is no need to know more than that. Today, pray for those who carried across more carelessness than malice, and ask for yourself the grace not to put off what can be purified now.
Dia 6 — 29 de outubroDay 6 — 29 October · Desde o mais profundoOut of the depths
Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice. Let thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication. If thou, O Lord, wilt mark iniquities: Lord, who shall stand it. For with thee there is merciful forgiveness. Salmo 129 (130 nas edições atuais), 1-4 — FigueiredoPsalm 129 (130 in current editions), 1-4 — Douay-Rheims
A última frase do salmo é a razão de tudo: «no Senhor está a misericórdia, e nele há copiosa redenção» (v. 7).This is the De profundis, the psalm the Church has prayed for her dead for centuries, in the Office of the Dead and at the graveside. It is not the psalm of someone who feels secure: it is the cry of one who knows that no one is innocent before God and who, even so, does not give up hoping. Whoever prays for the departed prays with them, from the same place, the same request. The psalm's own reason for it all comes near the end: “with the Lord there is mercy, and with him plentiful redemption” (v. 7).
Procurando-me, sentastes cansado; remistes-me, sofrendo a cruz: tanto esforço não seja em vão.Remember, merciful Jesus, that I was the cause of your journey: do not lose me on that day. Seeking me, you sat down weary; you redeemed me, enduring the cross: let such labour not be in vain. Sequência Dies irae, estrofes Recordare e Quaerens me (liturgia tradicional dos defuntos) — tradução própria do latimSequence Dies irae, stanzas Recordare and Quaerens me (traditional liturgy for the dead) — own translation from the Latin
The Dies irae, attributed since ancient times to Thomas of Celano, a thirteenth-century Franciscan friar, is the sequence of the Requiem Mass in the traditional rite. It begins by speaking of the day of judgement, but in the middle it turns into something else: a man turns to Christ and reminds him of what he has already done. Recordare, Iesu pie, quod sum causa tuae viae. What holds up the hope of the dying, and of those who pray for them, is no one's purity but Christ's weariness at the well and on the cross. Pray these words today for a departed soul, rather than for yourself.
For I am sure that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor might, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romanos 8,38-39 — FigueiredoRomans 8:38-39 — Douay-Rheims
Paul writes “neither death,” and the Church draws a practical conclusion: the dead remain in the same body of Christ, and what is done for them reaches them. According to the Catechism, our prayer for them is capable not only of helping them but also of making their intercession for us effective (no. 958). And for the dead the Church recommends above all the Mass, together with almsgiving, indulgences and works of penance (no. 1032). Today is the eve of All Saints: pray for your dead and, at tomorrow's Mass, ask those who have already arrived to pray for you.
Dia 9 — 1º de novembroDay 9 — 1 November · Na casa do PaiIn the Father's house
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes: and death shall be no more, nor mourning, nor crying, nor sorrow shall be any more, for the former things are passed away. Apocalipse 21,4 — FigueiredoRevelation 21:4 — Douay-Rheims
Today is All Saints, and this is where the novena ends, because this is the place it points to. “In my Father's house there are many mansions [...]; I go to prepare a place for you [...]; that where I am, you also may be” (Jn 14:2-3). At today's Mass the liturgy belongs to the saints; this prayer, more discreet, is for those who still pray for someone who has not yet arrived, and tomorrow the whole Church prays for the departed. Close by asking that each one of them, yours and the one nobody remembers, arrive in that house. On indulgences, see the note just below.

A oraçãoThe prayer
A mesma nos nove dias. Diga as suas intenções onde está indicado. The same on all nine days. Name your intentions where it says so.
Novena pelas Almas do PurgatórioNovena for the Holy Souls in Purgatory
Em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo. Amém.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
God of mercy, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who raised your Son from the dead and promised us a life that does not end: in this novena I bring before you the souls of all the faithful departed. My parents, my relatives, my friends, those who did me good and those who did me wrong; and also those whom no one remembers any more, and those who died with no one to pray for them.
I do not know where they are, nor how much remains for them. I know that your love reaches them where I cannot. Purify what still needs to be purified, forgive what still needs to be forgiven, and lead them into the light of your face, in the company of the Virgin Mary, the angels and all the saints. And teach me to live as one who knows he will die and hopes to rise.

Com a IgrejaWith the Church
And I pray with the Psalm the Church prays for her dead:
Desde o mais profundo clamei a ti, Senhor: Senhor, ouve a minha voz. [...]
Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice. [...] Because with the Lord there is mercy, and with him plentiful redemption.
And with the shortest and oldest prayer:
Dai-lhes, Senhor, o eterno descanso, e brilhe para eles a luz perpétua. Descansem em paz.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.
Amém.
Amen.

About the texts. On the texts. Scripture is given in the Douay-Rheims (Challoner, public domain) and, in Portuguese, in the translation of Fr Antônio Pereira de Figueiredo (public domain, spelling updated). Chapter and verse numbers follow the Vulgate, as in both translations: that is why the Psalm is 129 and not the 130 of current editions, and the passage from 1 Thessalonians comes one verse earlier. The stanzas of the Dies irae are my own translation from the Latin (public domain); the “Eternal Rest” and the “Fidelium animae” are prayers of the traditional liturgy. The prayer used on all nine days was composed for this novena. The doctrinal facts have been checked against the Catechism of the Catholic Church (nos. 958, 1030–1032) and the date given for Odilo of Cluny is the one tradition gives; historians do not always agree on the details. Indulgences. According to the norms in force (the Manual of Indulgences of the Apostolic Penitentiary), the faithful may apply a plenary indulgence to the souls in Purgatory, under the usual conditions (confession, Communion and prayer for the Pope's intentions): on All Souls' Day, by visiting a church and reciting the Our Father and the Creed; and from 1 to 8 November, by visiting a cemetery and praying for the departed. The conditions and dates can be changed by the Penitentiary; check with your parish priest. The painting is by Jacopo Vignali, Saint Michael the Archangel frees the souls in Purgatory, church of Santi Michele e Gaetano, Florence (seventeenth century; public domain). Left out on purpose: any claim about who is in Purgatory, for how long, or what it is like.
