Santa Teresa d'ÁvilaSaint Teresa of Ávila
De 6 a 14 de outubro — os nove dias que fecham na véspera da sua festa, 15 de outubro.6 to 14 October — the nine days that close on the eve of her feast, 15 October.
Teresa of Ávila wrote for people who pray badly. She spent almost twenty years that way herself, and said so in writing, without ornament: she fell, rose badly, fell again. What she teaches came out of that struggle. To pray, for her, is not to put on a good show before God; it is to be alone with the One who loves us.
This novena is prayed on the nine days before her feast, 15 October. The prayer is the same every day, and it is here below, whole: the same thing asked nine times, until it stops being a request and becomes a disposition. Whether your calendar is Irish or Brazilian, the date is the same: in the Roman Calendar, 15 October is the obligatory memorial of Saint Teresa of Jesus, virgin and Doctor of the Church.
What changes each day is the company: a sentence of hers, translated from the Spanish of her books, and a few lines from the life it belongs to. The days follow the road she herself described, from the little girl of Ávila to the Castle of the seven dwelling places, and they close on the eve of her feast.

It frightened us greatly to hear that pain and glory were for ever, in what we read. We would spend long moments talking of it, and liked to say over and over: For ever, ever, ever! Santa Teresa de Jesus: Livro da Vida 1,5Saint Teresa of Jesus: Book of Her Life 1:5
She was born at Ávila in 1515, into a large family with devout parents. With a brother almost her own age she read lives of the saints, and the two agreed to set out for the land of the Moors, begging alms, to die for God. They did not get far. But she tells us that this «for ever» stayed engraved in her, and that the truth of the way was impressed on her from childhood. At about twelve she lost her mother and asked, weeping, that Our Lady be her mother. Begin the novena with that simplicity, and ask for the same thing: a desire for God that does not pass.
Dia 2 — 7 de outubroDay 2 — 7 October · A forte coluna da oraçãoThe strong pillar of prayer
Por não me apoiar nesta forte coluna da oração, atravessei este mar tempestuoso por quase vinte anos, com estas quedas, levantando-me mal, pois tornava a cair.For not leaning on this strong pillar of prayer, I crossed this stormy sea for almost twenty years, with these falls, rising badly, for I fell again. Santa Teresa de Jesus: Livro da Vida 8,2Saint Teresa of Jesus: Book of Her Life 8:2
At twenty she entered the Carmelite monastery of the Incarnation at Ávila and took the name Teresa of Jesus. Three years later she fell so ill that she lay four days in a coma, looking as if she were dead. It was a religious life of ups and downs: for a time she even gave up prayer, thinking herself unworthy, and later she understood that this was the mistake. She does not write this to display herself, but so that no one, thinking himself weak, will abandon prayer. If you come to this novena tired of beginning again, she is the right saint.
It was of Christ most grievously wounded, and so devout that, on looking at it, I was all shaken to see him so, for it showed well what he went through for us. I felt so much how ill I had thanked him for those wounds that it seemed my heart was breaking. Santa Teresa de Jesus: Livro da Vida 9,1Saint Teresa of Jesus: Book of Her Life 9:1
An image had been brought into the convent oratory for a feast. She came in and saw it. Benedict XVI places this moment in Lent 1554, when Teresa was thirty-nine, as the climax of her struggle against her own weaknesses. She threw herself down before the image, in many tears, and begged God to strengthen her once and for all. Today, look too at a crucifix, without thinking of anything special, and let it look at you.
Mental prayer, as I see it, is nothing other than a dealing of friendship, being many times alone with him whom we know loves us. Santa Teresa de Jesus: Livro da Vida 8,5Saint Teresa of Jesus: Book of Her Life 8:5
It is the definition of prayer most quoted from her, and the one the Catechism of the Church takes up. Note the words: «dealing», that is, conversing, being on terms; «many times», because a friendship is not made of one visit; «alone», because some things are only said that way; and «whom we know loves us», because everything begins on his side. She wrote this in the Book of Her Life, in 1565. Today pray without hurry: what matters is not saying much, but being there.
Dia 5 — 10 de outubroDay 5 — 10 October · Basta olhá-loOnly look at him
I do not ask you now to think of him, nor to draw out many concepts, nor to make great and delicate reflections with your understanding; I ask no more of you than that you look at him. Santa Teresa de Jesus: Caminho de Perfeição 26,3 (cap. 22 no manuscrito do Escorial)Saint Teresa of Jesus: Way of Perfection 26:3 (ch. 22 in the Escorial manuscript)
In 1562, with the support of Bishop Don Álvaro de Mendoza, she founded at Ávila the first reformed Carmel, that of Saint Joseph. For the twelve novices there she wrote, in 1566, the Way of Perfection. Someone who cannot pray rarely lacks ideas, in the end; he lacks stillness. She lifts the weight: there is no need to think well, it is enough to turn the eyes of the soul, even in passing, to the One who never takes his eyes off us. Today, when your head does not help, look, and stay.
To consider our soul as a castle made all of a diamond or of very clear crystal, in which there are many rooms, just as in heaven there are many dwelling places. Santa Teresa de Jesus: Castelo Interior, Primeiras Moradas 1,1Saint Teresa of Jesus: Interior Castle, First Dwelling Places 1:1
It is the image with which the Interior Castle opens, written in 1577: the soul as a castle of seven dwelling places, with God at the centre. She says at once where the door is: «the door for entering this castle is prayer and consideration». Whoever prays has already entered, even if still in the first rooms, where, she says, many «vermin» (little creatures), our worries, come in with us. She does not promise to drive them off at once; she promises that the King is within, and that it is worth going further. Today, pray as one who is walking through a door.
Dia 7 — 12 de outubroDay 7 — 12 October · Amar mais do que pensarTo love more than to think
To profit much on this road and to climb to the dwelling places we desire, the point is not to think much but to love much; and so, whatever most stirs you to love, do that. Santa Teresa de Jesus: Castelo Interior, Quartas Moradas 1,7Saint Teresa of Jesus: Interior Castle, Fourth Dwelling Places 1:7
In the years when she was reforming Carmel, Teresa never walked alone. In 1568, with Saint John of the Cross, she opened at Duruelo the first friary of Discalced Carmelites. It is the essential that she writes here, in an almost abrupt sentence: do not count ideas, count love. And since love is not a taste but a will to give, whatever «stirs you most to love» may be a prayer, a silence, a visit, a letter. Ask yourself today what in you stirs to love, and do that.
Dia 8 — 13 de outubroDay 8 — 13 October · Entre as panelasAmong the pots
Well then, my daughters, let there be no discouragement when obedience keeps you busy with outward things; understand that if it is in the kitchen, the Lord walks among the pots, helping you within and without. Santa Teresa de Jesus: Livro das Fundações 5,8Saint Teresa of Jesus: Book of Foundations 5:8
Viajava, negociava casas, adoecia, e continuava a rezar. After 1562 she founded convents all over Spain, seventeen in all, and wrote the Book of Foundations (1573 to 1582) to tell how God acted in them. She travelled, haggled over houses, fell ill, and went on praying. She writes to her daughters, who were distressed when their tasks drew them out of recollection. Her answer is the one that most comforts anyone with a home, a job and children: God does not wait for you to leave the stove to meet you. Pray today in the middle of what you have to do.
This is what prayer is for, my daughters; this is what the spiritual marriage is for: that works be born always, works, works. Santa Teresa de Jesus: Castelo Interior, Sétimas Moradas 4,6Saint Teresa of Jesus: Interior Castle, Seventh Dwelling Places 4:6
A festa é amanhã. It is the close of the Castle, and the close of her life. Teresa died at Alba de Tormes, on the way back from Burgos to Ávila, in 1582, and her last words, according to Benedict XVI, were: «After all, I die a child of the Church». That year Catholic Europe exchanged the Julian calendar for the Gregorian and, in October, 4 was followed by 15; that is why her feast falls on the 15th. The feast is tomorrow. End the novena by asking what she says: that prayer may bear works, and that your friendship with God may reach the people beside you.

Novena a Santa Teresa d'ÁvilaNovena to Saint Teresa of Ávila
Em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo. Amém.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
O Saint Teresa of Jesus, who from a child wanted God's «for ever», who fell and rose so many times, and who learned and taught that to pray is to be alone with the One we know loves us: teach me to pray. Teach me to look at Christ when I cannot think, to love more than I think, to find him among the pots, and to let my prayer bear works. Obtain for me from God the graces I ask of him in this novena, if they are for his glory and the good of my soul.

Com o poema que se atribui a elaWith the poem attributed to her
And I pray the lines that tradition keeps as hers and that the Church quotes in her Catechism:
Nada te perturbe, nada te espante;
Let nothing trouble you, nothing frighten you;
tudo passa, Deus não muda;
all things pass, God does not change;
a paciência tudo alcança;
patience attains everything;
quem tem Deus nada lhe falta:
whoever has God lacks nothing:
só Deus basta.
God alone suffices.
Amém.
Amen.

About the texts. Saint Teresa's words are translated here by me, from the Spanish of her books (Life, Way of Perfection, Interior Castle, Foundations), without copying any modern translation. The numbering is the usual one; in the Way of Perfection, chapter 26 of the Valladolid edition is chapter 22 of the Escorial manuscript. The first prayer was composed for this novena. The poem «Nada te turbe» comes with a caution: it is printed as hers in modern editions and quoted in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (no. 227), and tradition says she kept it in the breviary she used for the Office; but Carmelite scholars have questioned the authorship (having the paper in the breviary does not prove she composed it), and that is why it is not one of the sentences of the nine days. The facts of her life (Ávila, 1515; the Incarnation; Lent 1554; Saint Joseph's, 1562; Duruelo, 1568; seventeen foundations; death at Alba de Tormes, 1582) follow Benedict XVI's catechesis of 2 February 2011 and her own writings. Sayings of «Teresa» that circulate online without a source were left out on purpose. The portrait at the top is by fray Juan de la Miseria, painted at Seville in 1576. Public domain.
