On the night of the farewell, when Jesus had just said that he would show himself to whoever loves him, one of the apostles interrupted with a question, and John takes care to say who it was: “Judas, not the Iscariot”. It is the only sentence of Jude Thaddeus in the Gospels, and it is a question. The rest of what he left is a letter of twenty-five verses, one of the shortest in the Bible.

This novena is prayed from 19 to 27 October, the nine days before his feast on 28 October, which the Church celebrates together with that of Saint Simon. He is known in Brazil and around the world as the saint of hard and desperate causes. That devotion is popular and old; it is not dogma, and the Church does not teach that he answers more than any other saint. Pray it with trust, not as a bargain: a novena does not oblige God to anything, it teaches us how to ask. The prayer is the same on all nine days and is at the foot of the page.

What changes is the company, and the company is his own letter. The nine days begin with the question in the Gospel and then walk through Jude’s letter, verse by verse: the servant who introduces himself, the greeting, the faith to be defended, remembering, hope, care for those who are lost and the closing praise. The texts are from Scripture, in public-domain translations.

A São Judas TadeuTo Saint Jude Thaddeus

Saint Jude Thaddeus, apostle and servant of Jesus Christ, brother of James, who questioned the Lord on the night of the farewell and wrote to Christians that they should keep themselves in the love of God: take me by the hand in this hour. You know the weight of what I carry, and the Lord knows it better still. I do not ask you to explain everything to me, nor that God should do as I command. I ask you to pray with me, that I may trust, not give up, and receive what is best for my soul, and the grace I need so much now, if it is God’s will.

Com as palavras deleIn his own words

And I ask, with the greeting with which he opens his letter, for myself and for all those for whom I pray:

Misericórdia, paz e caridade vos sejam multiplicadas.

Mercy unto you, and peace, and charity be fulfilled.

Amém.

Amen.

Our Father · Hail Mary · Glory be.

Saint Jude, pray for us, and for all who invoke your aid.

Em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo. Amém.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O pedido final é a invocação tradicional.

About the texts. Every sentence is from Scripture. In Portuguese I use the Tradução Brasileira (1917), in the public domain, rather than Figueiredo, whose text I could not check against a reliable edition; in English, the Douay-Rheims (American edition of 1899). The two rest on slightly different ancient texts at some points of verse 1 and verse 22, so day 8 quotes only verse 23, where they agree. The letter presents itself as by “Jude, brother of James”, and most Catholic commentators identify him with the apostle Jude Thaddeus; this is the traditional reading, not unanimous among scholars. His preaching and martyrdom in Persia, with Simon, are ancient tradition, not historical certainty. The prayer was composed for this novena; the traditional prayer to Saint Jude is of popular, anonymous authorship, and I have not reproduced it. The closing invocation is the traditional one. The image is by El Greco, Saint Jude Thaddeus (c. 1610-1614), in the public domain.
