Santa EdwigesSaint Hedwig of Silesia
She was a duchess, and it is told that she went barefoot in winter, with her shoes in her hand. She was born around 1174, married a duke while still a girl, had children and buried several of them, founded a monastery and, once widowed, went to live in it. She died at Trzebnica, in Silesia, on 15 October 1243 — the day before the date on which her feast is kept today.
This novena is prayed on the nine days before the feast, 16 October, and the last of them falls on the anniversary of her death. In Brazil, devotion to Saint Hedwig is hugely popular, and the people invoke her as protector of the poor and of those in debt. It is a title that grew out of popular piety, from what is told of her charity towards prisoners and the needy. The prayer here promises nothing: it asks for trust in God, honesty with money, and an open heart toward those who have less. The prayer is the same on all nine days, and it is here below, whole.
What changes is the company. There is not one sentence of hers that we can quote with confidence; so each day brings a passage of Scripture, and a line from the life it belongs to. The nine days follow that life: from Andechs to Trzebnica, from the palace table to the monastery door.

Blessed is the man that feareth the Lord: he shall delight exceedingly in his commandments.
Hedwig was born around 1174 in the castle of Andechs, in Bavaria, one of the eight children of Count Berthold IV. Saint Elizabeth of Hungary was her niece. At twelve, the old biography tells us, she was given in marriage to Henry I of Silesia, who succeeded his father as duke in 1202. Pray today for what the psalm describes: a heart that finds delight in the will of God, wherever life has placed it.
Dia 2 — 8 de outubroDay 2 — 8 October · Mãe e duquesaMother and duchess
Be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on. Behold the birds of the air, for they neither sow, nor do they reap, nor gather into barns: and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not you of much more value than they? Mateus 6, 25-26 — paráfrase fielMatthew 6:25–26 — Douay-Rheims
Edwiges teve sete filhos, segundo a Enciclopédia Católica (outras fontes contam seis), e viu morrer vários deles ainda jovens. É ao ouvido de gente assim que Jesus diz estas palavras, e é com elas que se reza hoje: sem negar a preocupação, entregando-a.Hedwig had seven children, according to the Catholic Encyclopedia (other sources count six), and she saw several of them die young. Whoever takes her as a companion in money troubles is not facing a woman who never suffered: it is a mother who lost much. These are the words Jesus speaks to the ears of people like that, and they are the words to pray today: not denying the worry, but handing it over.
Unless the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it.
In 1202, at Hedwig’s request, Duke Henry founded a monastery of Cistercian nuns at Trzebnica. It was a real monastery, with its land and its revenues, and one of the couple’s daughters, Gertrude, would become its abbess. The sources say the couple also supported other monasteries. Today, pray for what you are building — the home, the work, the family — and ask that it not be the work of your hands alone.
Dia 4 — 10 de outubroDay 4 — 10 October · Com as próprias mãosWith her own hands
Give alms out of thy substance, and turn not away thy face from any poor person: for so it shall come to pass that the face of the Lord shall not be turned from thee. According to thy ability be merciful. If thou have much give abundantly: if thou have little, take care even so to bestow willingly a little.
The Life of Hedwig insists that she helped the poor herself, and not through servants. It is told that she gave shelter to the sick and to people without means. Tobit gives the right measure: give according to your means, never despising the little. Pray today for eyes to see who is near you and needs a hand, not just an idea.
Fear not, little flock, for it hath pleased your Father to give you a kingdom. Sell what you possess, and give alms. Make to yourselves bags which grow not old, a treasure in heaven which faileth not: where no thief approacheth, nor moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there is also your heart.
After the last of her children, born in 1208, the couple by common consent took a vow of chastity, in 1209. Hedwig took to wearing plain clothes and old shoes, and she regarded the poor as her patrons. Tradition says that in winter she went barefoot, and that when the Bishop of Wrocław told her to put on shoes, she carried them in her hand instead of wearing them. Pray today for freedom before things, without despising them.
Dia 6 — 12 de outubroDay 6 — 12 October · A pequena imagem de MariaThe little image of Mary
My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. Because he hath regarded the humility of his handmaid. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
Tradition holds, from the old life of Hedwig, the Legenda maior, that she had a special devotion to the Mother of God and always carried with her a small image of Mary, in ivory. It is told that she blessed the sick with it. This is how she was painted in the Hedwig Codex of 1353, which illustrates this page: the image in one hand, the shoes on her arm. Pray the Magnificat with her today, the song of one who has nothing and receives everything.
Tive fome, e me destes de comer; tive sede, e me destes de beber; era forasteiro, e me recolhestes; estava nu, e me vestistes; doente, e me visitastes; preso, e viestes ver-me. [...] I was hungry, and you gave me to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; naked, and you covered me: sick, and you visited me: I was in prison, and you came to me. [...] As long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me.
The biographies say Hedwig visited prisoners and, using her position as duchess, interceded for the condemned. Popular piety added that she paid the debts of those jailed for being unable to pay them. That is where the title of protector of the indebted comes from, so dear in Brazil. Pray today for those stifled by debt, and ask for the grace to be just in what you owe and generous in what you can.
Be not therefore solicitous for to morrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.
Henry died in 1238, and Hedwig withdrew to the monastery they had founded, taking the habit of a lay sister, without vows. In 1241 her son Henry II the Pious was killed at the battle of Legnica, facing the Mongols. These are years when losses pile up, and Jesus’ word for them is short: one day at a time. Pray today for those who carry the whole of tomorrow on their backs.
Dia 9 — 15 de outubroDay 9 — 15 October · A morte dos santosThe death of the saints
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.
Hedwig died at Trzebnica on 15 October 1243 (some old sources say 12 October) and was buried beside her husband. Pope Clement IV canonised her on 26 March 1267. Tomorrow is her feast, which the Church keeps as an optional memorial of a religious. End the novena giving thanks for what she showed: one can be a duchess, a mother and a widow, and live as a servant of the poor.

Novena a Santa EdwigesNovena to Saint Hedwig of Silesia
Em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo. Amém.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Saint Hedwig, who were a duchess and chose to live as a servant of the poor, look upon us who pray. Teach us to trust in God’s Providence without ceasing to work and to do what is ours to do; to be honest with money and generous toward those who have less; and not to lose our peace when worries and debts weigh on us. May Our Lady, whom you loved so much, always lead us to her Son.
I place before you now, with trust, what I carry in my heart:
(diga aqui as suas intenções)
(say here your intentions)
Saint Hedwig, pray for us, that God’s will may be done in all things, and that we may receive the grace to accept it. Amen.
Com a devoção de sempreWith the old devotion
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Glória ao Pai, e ao Filho, e ao Espírito Santo. Como era no princípio, agora e sempre. Amém.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
Santa Edwiges, rogai por nós. Jesus, eu confio em vós.
Saint Hedwig, pray for us. Jesus, I trust in you.
Em nome do Pai, e do Filho, e do Espírito Santo.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

About the texts. We quote no sentence attributed to Saint Hedwig: we found no word of hers whose authenticity is secure. So the nine passages are from Scripture: the English is the Douay-Rheims (public domain), and the Portuguese is a faithful rendering from the Vulgate in the tradition of Figueiredo; psalm numbers are the Vulgate’s, with the Hebrew in brackets. The prayer to the saint was composed for this novena; the Hail Holy Queen, the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be are traditional. The facts come from the Catholic Encyclopedia, Vatican News and biographies of the saint; where the sources differ (the number of children, the exact day of death, 12 or 15 October), we have said so. What is told of the ivory image, the bare feet and the prisoners’ debts comes from tradition and from her old life, the Legenda maior. The title of protector of the indebted grew out of popular devotion, strong in Brazil. The feast is on 16 October, an optional memorial in the Roman Calendar.
