Santo ExpeditoSaint Expeditus
Of the saint of urgent causes, one of the most sought-after saints in Brazil, history keeps almost nothing. An ancient calendar of martyrs, compiled in the fifth century, records on 19 April, at Melitene in Roman Armenia, near present-day Malatya in Turkey, a group of six martyrs “crowned on one day”. Among the names is Expeditus. That is what the documents guarantee. The Roman soldier, the crow that cried “tomorrow”, the cross with the word “today”: all of that came many centuries later, and it is worth knowing how to tell one from the other.
This novena is prayed from 10 to 18 April, the nine days before his day, 19 April. He is not in the General Roman Calendar; the date comes from the ancient martyrologies, and the devotion is popular, not dogma. His name, which in Latin means “unencumbered”, “ready”, made him the saint of urgent causes. Pray with trust, not as a bargain: a novena does not oblige God to anything, and there is no need to hand out holy cards or to “publish” the favour in order to be heard. In some years these days fall in Holy Week or in the Octave of Easter; the novena keeps company with the liturgy of those days, it does not replace it. The prayer is the same on all nine days and is at the foot of the page.
The nine days move from what is known to what is told, and from what is told to what Scripture teaches. They begin with the name in the martyrology and the figure of the soldier; they pass through the legend of the crow, which says “tomorrow” when God says “today”; and then they walk through the passages of the Bible on God’s today: the psalm, the acceptable time, Zacchaeus coming down in haste, the peace of one who is not anxious about tomorrow and, on the eve, the crown promised to whoever is faithful until death.

In Armenia, in the city of Melitene: Hermogenes, Gaius, Expeditus, Aristonicus, Rufus and Galata, crowned on one day.
This is how Expeditus enters history: a name on a list, beside five companions, with no age, no profession, no account of the martyrdom. “Crowned” is the old way of saying that they gave their lives for Christ. Some scholars have wondered whether the name might be a copying error for another; the devotion of the people did not wait for the answer. There are many saints like this, known to God alone. Begin the novena with that humility: we know almost nothing about him, but we know what matters, that he preferred Christ to his own life.
And the centurion making answer, said: Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldst enter under my roof: but only say the word, and my servant shall be healed. Evangelho de São Mateus 8,8Gospel of Matthew 8:8
Later tradition made Expeditus a Roman soldier, perhaps because of his name: in Latin military language the expediti were lightly equipped soldiers, ready to march. A legion was indeed stationed at Melitene, the Twelfth, called Fulminata. Whether he was a soldier, we do not know. But the Gospel knows a military man who taught everyone how to ask. The centurion of Capernaum does not demand that Jesus come to his house, nor does he set a time: he trusts the word. Ask today as he did, without conditions, sure that one word from the Lord is enough.
Dia 3 — 12 de abrilDay 3 — 12 April · Bom soldado de CristoA good soldier of Christ
Labour as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. Segunda Carta a Timóteo 2,3Second Letter to Timothy 2:3
Paul, in chains for the Gospel, writes to Timothy and uses an image everyone understood: the soldier. Straight after, he explains that no soldier on service entangles himself in the affairs of this life. To be “expeditus” is this: free of what weighs us down, ready for what God asks. Today, before you present your request, look at what you are carrying: a grudge, a vice, a worry you bear alone. Hand that over to God first. Whoever travels light arrives sooner.
Dia 4 — 13 de abrilDay 4 — 13 April · O corvo e o amanhãThe crow and tomorrow
Delay not to be converted to the Lord, and defer it not from day to day. Eclesiástico 5,8Ecclesiasticus 5:8
Agora, a lenda. Ele pisou a ave e respondeu: «Hoje!». Now, the legend. It is told that on the day Expeditus decided to become a Christian, the devil appeared to him as a crow, crying “cras, cras”, which in Latin means “tomorrow”. He stamped on the bird and answered: “Today!”. It is a story with no support in the ancient documents, and it does not need to have happened in order to teach: putting things off is the most polite temptation there is. The Book of Ecclesiasticus said the same long before. What have you been leaving until later with God? Say it today, in prayer, by name.
Dia 5 — 14 de abrilDay 5 — 14 April · Hoje, se ouvirdesTo day if you shall hear
To day if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts. Salmo 95 (94),7-8Psalm 95 (94):7-8
It is the psalm with which the Church usually opens each day’s prayer in the Liturgy of the Hours, and at its centre is the word “today”. The Letter to the Hebrews returns to it several times, to remind us that the time for hearing God is always the present. That is why, in the best-known images of Saint Expeditus, the cross he holds up bears the word HODIE, “today”, against the crow’s CRAS. After saying the prayer, stay a few minutes in silence today and ask simply what the Lord is asking of you now.
Dia 6 — 15 de abrilDay 6 — 15 April · Eis agora o tempoBehold, now is the time
Eis agora o tempo aceitável, eis agora o dia da salvação.Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. Segunda Carta aos Coríntios 6,2Second Letter to the Corinthians 6:2
Paul quotes the prophet Isaiah and adds his own “now”. Those who turn to Saint Expeditus are usually in a hurry: a deadline, an exam, a lawsuit, a bill, a medical test. Haste is no sin; the Gospel has its urgency too. But the greater urgency is that of salvation: the day to be reconciled, to ask forgiveness, to come back. If you can, go to Confession this week, and take your urgent cause there too. It fits there, along with the rest of your life.
Dia 7 — 16 de abrilDay 7 — 16 April · Desce depressaMake haste and come down
And when Jesus was come to the place, looking up, he saw him, and said to him: Zacheus, make haste and come down; for this day I must abide in thy house. And he made haste and came down; and received him with joy. Evangelho de São Lucas 19,5-6Gospel of Luke 19:5-6
Zacchaeus climbed the tree only to see Jesus pass by, and he was seen. The Lord is in a hurry too, and uses the two words of this novena: “make haste” and “this day”. Zacchaeus does not ask for time to put his life in order; he comes down, welcomes Jesus with joy and, that same day, changes what needed changing. It is the answer the legend puts into the mouth of Expeditus, now with a face and a name in the Gospel. Today, let the Lord into the part of your house you keep shut.
Be not therefore solicitous for to morrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof. Evangelho de São Mateus 6,34Gospel of Matthew 6:34
It would be a mistake to conclude from the legend of the crow that a Christian must live in distress, racing against the clock. The same Jesus who asks for haste in conversion tells us not to be anxious about tomorrow. God’s “today” is not anguish: it is doing now what belongs to now and leaving with him what is his. Hand over your urgent cause today without trying to control the hour of the answer. Asking insistently and waiting in peace do not contradict each other; they are the two hands of the same trust.
Dia 9 — 18 de abrilDay 9 — 18 April · A coroa da vidaThe crown of life
Não temas o que estás para sofrer; […] Sê fiel até a morte, e eu te darei a coroa da vida.Fear none of those things which thou shalt suffer. […] Be thou faithful until death: and I will give thee the crown of life. Apocalipse 2,10Revelation 2:10
Tomorrow is 19 April, the day the martyrology remembers Expeditus and his companions as “crowned”. According to tradition they died at Melitene in the persecution of Diocletian, at the beginning of the fourth century. The word comes from this promise to the Church at Smyrna: the crown of life for whoever is faithful until death. In Brazil the day draws crowds to the churches dedicated to him. End the novena by asking, besides your urgent grace, for the most urgent one of all: faithfulness, today and to the end.

A Santo ExpeditoTo Saint Expeditus
Saint Expeditus, martyr of Christ, who, as tradition tells, did not leave until tomorrow what God asked of you today: pray with me in this hour. I bring a request that cannot wait, and you know the haste of those who suffer. I do not ask that God should do my will at the hour I set. I ask that I may not put off what he asks of me, that I may trust without anxiety, and that I may receive, if it is for the good of my soul, the grace I need so much now.

Com a oração da IgrejaWith the prayer of the Church
And I pray with the Church’s ancient prayer for the feast of a martyr:
Grant, we beseech thee, almighty God, that we who keep the heavenly birthday of blessed Expeditus, thy martyr, may by his intercession be strengthened in the love of thy name. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, world without end.

About the texts. Almost nothing is known for certain about Saint Expeditus: his name appears in the ancient Hieronymian Martyrology, on 19 April, among the martyrs of Melitene; the sentence for day 1 is my own translation from the Latin of that list. The soldier, the legion, the death in the persecution of Diocletian and the legend of the crow are later tradition and are written as such. Bible quotations come, in Portuguese, from the Tradução Brasileira (1917) and, in English, from the Douay-Rheims (American edition of 1899), both in the public domain; the verse from Ecclesiasticus, which is not in the Tradução Brasileira, I translated into Portuguese from the Latin Vulgate (5:8; 5:7 in modern Bibles). The prayer of the Church is the collect from the old Common of a Martyr in the Roman Breviary, with the saint’s name in the place provided, in my own translation from the Latin. The prayer to Saint Expeditus was composed for this novena; the popular prayers that circulate on leaflets are anonymous and I have not reproduced them. The image is an anonymous painting of about 1781 in the church of Gesù e Maria at Acireale, Sicily, in the public domain.
