Santo AntônioSaint Anthony of Padua
He was born in Lisbon around 1195 and baptised Fernando. He died at the gates of Padua on 13 June 1231, aged about thirty-six, and less than a year later Pope Gregory IX had declared him a saint. That is why Portugal calls him Saint Anthony of Lisbon and the rest of the world Saint Anthony of Padua. The Pope who canonised him had heard him preach and called him the “Ark of the Covenant”, so well did he know the Scriptures.
This novena is prayed from 4 to 12 June, the nine days before his feast on 13 June. In Brazil many people pray a thirteen-day devotion, from 1 to 13 June; the novena is the shorter form of the same preparation. Saint Anthony is invoked to find what has been lost, remembered in bread shared with the poor and, in Brazil, in the June festivals and in the custom of asking him for a good marriage. These are popular devotions, not dogma. Pray with trust, not as a bargain: a novena does not oblige God to anything; it teaches us how to ask. The prayer is the same on all nine days and is at the foot of the page.
The nine days follow his life, from the boy in Lisbon to the friar who died saying “I see my Lord”: the studious canon of Coimbra, the martyrs who changed his course, the shipwreck, the hidden years, the preacher, Padua, his death and the memory the Church keeps of him. The sentences come from Scripture, from his own sermons and from the earliest accounts of his life.

One thing I have asked of the Lord, this will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. Salmo 26,4Psalm 26:4 (27:4)
Fernando was the son of a noble family who lived near Lisbon Cathedral, and it was in the cathedral school that he learnt his letters. At about fifteen, in 1210, he joined the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine at the monastery of São Vicente, outside the city walls. He had everything for a comfortable life and chose the house of the Lord. Begin the novena by asking for what the psalm asks: not many things, but one, the one that gives meaning to all the rest. Before you name your intention, hand over to God the place he holds in your life.
Dia 2 — 5 de junhoDay 2 — 5 June · Os anos de CoimbraThe years in Coimbra
Thy word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my paths. Salmo 118,105Psalm 118:105 (119:105)
Visits from relatives and friends distracted him, and in 1212 he asked to move to the monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra. There he spent eight years in study and prayer, and his remarkable memory stored up the Scriptures and the Fathers of the Church. Nobody imagined what it was for; he did not know himself. God prepares in silence what he will ask for later. Today, read a passage of the Gospel slowly before you pray, and ask for the grace to know God’s word not as information but as light for the next step.
Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Evangelho de São João 15,13Gospel of John 15:13
In 1220 the bodies of five Franciscan friars, killed in Morocco that same year, were brought to Santa Cruz. Fernando knew the poor friars of the little house at Olivais, who came to the monastery to beg, and before those martyrs he resolved to become one of them, to proclaim Christ and, if need be, to give his life. He received the Franciscan habit and changed his name: from then on he was Anthony. Sometimes God speaks through an event that crosses our path. Ask today for the courage not to put off what you already know he is asking of you.
Dia 4 — 7 de junhoDay 4 — 7 June · O naufrágio e o silêncioShipwreck and silence
A vossa fortaleza estará no silêncio e na esperança.In silence and in hope shall your strength be.
Anthony set out for Morocco, but a serious illness laid him low the whole of that winter. In the spring of 1221 he sailed back towards Portugal, and a storm drove the ship to Sicily. From there he went on to the friars’ general chapter at Assisi and, when it ended, was left with nowhere to go, saying nothing of his studies to anyone. He was sent to the hermitage of Montepaolo, near Forlì, to say Mass for the brothers. Nothing had turned out as he had planned. If your novena began with a plan undone, pray today in silence and in hope.
It pleases me that you should teach sacred theology to the brothers, provided that in this study you do not extinguish the spirit of prayer and devotion, as the Rule requires. São Francisco de Assis, carta a Frei Antônio (c. 1224)Saint Francis of Assisi, letter to Brother Anthony (c. 1224)
At an ordination in Forlì, nobody had been appointed to preach. The superiors told the quiet friar from Montepaolo to say whatever the Spirit gave him, and Anthony, who began timidly, astonished everyone with what he knew of the Scriptures. Soon afterwards Francis of Assisi wrote him a short letter, calling him “my bishop” and allowing him to teach theology to the brothers, on one condition. Ask today for the same for yourself: that work, study and worries may not extinguish in you the spirit of prayer.
Dia 6 — 9 de junhoDay 6 — 9 June · Que falem as obrasLet works speak
A palavra é viva quando falam as obras. Cessem, peço-vos, as palavras; falem as obras.Speech is alive when works speak. Let words cease, I pray you; let works speak. Santo Antônio, Sermão de Pentecostes (Sermões dominicais e festivos)Saint Anthony, Sermon for Pentecost (Sunday and Festal Sermons)
From then on Anthony taught at Bologna, Montpellier and Toulouse and preached across northern Italy and southern France, at a time when the Cathar heresy divided many towns. He spoke openly, to rich and poor, to the people and to those in authority, and he wrote down his sermons to help other preachers. But what he asked most of Christians was not eloquence; it was consistency. Today, together with your intention, offer God one concrete deed, small and hidden, that will speak for you.
Dia 7 — 10 de junhoDay 7 — 10 June · A Quaresma de PáduaLent in Padua
A caridade é a alma da fé, ela a faz viva; sem o amor, a fé morre.Charity is the soul of faith, it gives it life; without love, faith dies. Santo Antônio, Sermões dominicais e festivos, citado por Bento XVI, audiência geral de 10/02/2010Saint Anthony, Sunday and Festal Sermons, quoted by Benedict XVI, general audience of 10 February 2010
The last Lent Anthony preached was that of 1231, in Padua, the city where he had founded a friary. The crowds were so great that the city’s priests could not keep up with the confessions. He preached against hatred and usury: there were reconciliations, restitutions, debtors and prisoners set free. On 15 March that year, through his efforts, the city passed a law in favour of debtors who could not pay. Today, pray for someone crushed by a debt, and see whether there is a reconciliation that depends on you.
Dia 8 — 11 de junhoDay 8 — 11 June · Vejo o meu SenhorI see my Lord
Vejo o meu Senhor.I see my Lord. Últimas palavras de Santo Antônio, segundo a primeira biografia dele, a «Assidua» (1232)Saint Anthony’s last words, according to his first biography, the Assidua (1232)
After Lent, Anthony withdrew to Camposampiero, near Padua, and there fell gravely ill. He asked to die in Padua, and the friars carried him on an ox cart, but he could not bear the journey. They stopped at the Poor Clares’ monastery at Arcella. After he had been anointed, he sang a hymn to Our Lady, “O glorious Lady”, and his gaze became fixed. They asked what he saw, and he answered: “I see my Lord”. He died that Friday, 13 June 1231, towards evening. Ask today for the grace of a good death, for yourself and for your own.
The memory of him shall not depart away, and his name shall be in request from generation to generation. Nations shall declare his wisdom, and the church shall shew forth his praise. Eclesiástico 39,13-14Ecclesiasticus 39:13-14
Amanhã é a festa dele. Tomorrow is his feast. Anthony was canonised at Spoleto on Pentecost Sunday, 30 May 1232. In 1263 his relics were moved to the basilica built in Padua, and Saint Bonaventure found incorrupt the tongue that had preached so much. In 1946 Pius XII declared him a Doctor of the Church, with the title “Evangelical Doctor”. Not long after his death, Brother Julian of Speyer composed the Si quaeris, which is part of the prayer of this novena. End as the people of Padua did: telling what God has done, and giving thanks before you know the answer.

A Santo AntônioTo Saint Anthony
Saint Anthony, son of Lisbon and friar of Padua, who left everything to follow the poor Christ, who kept his word in your heart and proclaimed it with your life: look on me, who come to you with what weighs on me. You who are remembered for finding what was lost, help me to find again the most important things I have lost, faith, peace and the way home. Pray with me, that I may ask for what is good, accept what God wills and receive the grace I need so much now, if it is for the good of my soul.

O responsório «Si quaeris»The responsory Si quaeris
If you seek miracles: death, error and calamity, the devil and leprosy flee, and the sick rise up healed. The sea and chains give way; limbs and lost things are asked for and received by young and old. Dangers pass away, and need is at an end: let those who have known it tell it; let the people of Padua say it.
Pray for us, blessed Anthony. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Oremos.
Let us pray. O God, may the feast of blessed Anthony, your confessor and doctor, gladden your Church, that she may ever be strengthened with spiritual help and be found worthy to enjoy eternal joys. Through Christ our Lord.

About the texts. Scripture is quoted in Portuguese from the translation by Fr António Pereira de Figueiredo, in the public domain, with modernised spelling, and in English from the Douay-Rheims (American edition of 1899); the psalms keep the Vulgate numbering. The sentence for day 6, from his sermon for Pentecost Sunday, and Saint Francis’s letter to him (day 5) are my own translations from the Latin. The sentence for day 7 is from one of his sermons, in the English given by the Vatican for Benedict XVI’s general audience of 10 February 2010. The last words on day 8 come from his first biography, written for his canonisation. The responsory Si quaeris, by Brother Julian of Speyer (thirteenth century), and the old collect of the feast, from the former Breviary, are my own translations from the Latin. The prayer to Saint Anthony was composed for this novena. Legendary miracles, such as the sermon to the fishes, have been left out on purpose. The image is by Francisco de Zurbarán, Saint Anthony of Padua (c. 1640), in the public domain.
