NovenaNovena
A data muda todo ano, porque depende da Páscoa.7 to 15 May 2027 — the nine days of prayer before Pentecost, which in 2027 falls on Sunday 16 May. The dates move every year, because they depend on Easter.
After Jesus was taken up into heaven, the Apostles did not go straight out to preach. They came back from Mount Olivet to Jerusalem, went up into an upper room and stayed there in prayer, “with Mary the mother of Jesus”. They were waiting for what the Lord had promised them: “you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost, not many days hence.” On the day of Pentecost the Spirit came down upon them. Many see in those days of waiting the model of every novena, which is why this one is often called the first of them all.
In 1897, in the encyclical Divinum illud munus, Pope Leo XIII ordered that every parish in the world should hold a novena before Pentecost, or Whitsunday, every year. As Pentecost depends on the date of Easter, the days change from year to year: in 2027 the novena runs from Friday 7 May to Saturday 15 May, the eve of Pentecost. The prayer is the same on all nine days and is at the foot of the page. It can be prayed alone, as a family or with a group, and it can be printed.
What changes each day is the word that goes with the prayer. The nine days follow the road the Apostles themselves took: the promise of the Father, the waiting in prayer with Mary, what Jesus said of the Comforter at the Last Supper, what Saint Paul teaches of the Spirit who prays in us and pours out the love of God, the seven gifts foretold by Isaiah and, on the last day, the wind and the fire of Pentecost. The prayer draws on the Church’s two great hymns to the Holy Spirit, the Veni Creator and the Veni Sancte Spiritus.

Dia 1 — 7 de maioDay 1 — 7 May · A promessa do PaiThe promise of the Father
He commanded them, that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but should wait for the promise of the Father, which you have heard (saith he) by my mouth. For John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost, not many days hence. Atos dos Apóstolos 1,4-5Acts of the Apostles 1:4-5
Jesus could have sent the Apostles out into the world that same day. Instead, he asked them to wait. The waiting is part of the gift: the Holy Spirit is not something we produce by effort, but someone we receive. The Apostles had seen the risen Lord, and still they were not ready. Begin the novena with that same humility. Tell the Lord plainly what you cannot do on your own, and ask for the grace to wait for him without losing heart.
Dia 2 — 8 de maioDay 2 — 8 May · Perseverantes, com MariaPersevering, with Mary
All these were persevering with one mind in prayer with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren. Atos dos Apóstolos 1,14Acts of the Apostles 1:14
Saint Luke names each of the eleven Apostles who were in that room, and then he adds: the women, the kinsmen of Jesus, and Mary his mother. She already knew the Holy Spirit. Years before, at Nazareth, the angel had told her: “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee.” Now she prays with the Church being born, which is waiting for the same Spirit. Today, ask Our Lady to pray with you and for you, and to teach you to persevere.
Dia 3 — 9 de maioDay 3 — 9 May · Outro ConsoladorAnother Comforter
And I will ask the Father, and he shall give you another Paraclete, that he may abide with you for ever. The spirit of truth [...]: but you shall know him; because he shall abide with you, and shall be in you. Evangelho segundo São João 14,16-17Gospel according to Saint John 14:16-17
Jesus spoke these words at the Last Supper, on the night before he died. “Paraclete”, the Greek word the Gospel uses, means one who is called to stand beside someone: the advocate, the defender, the comforter. Jesus says “another” because he himself was the first. And straight after, he promises: “I will not leave you orphans.” No one who prays this novena is alone. Today, hand over to the Holy Spirit whatever weighs most on your heart, and let him stand beside you.
Dia 4 — 10 de maioDay 4 — 10 May · Ele vos ensinará todas as coisasHe will teach you all things
But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you. Evangelho segundo São João 14,26Gospel according to Saint John 14:26
The Gospels make no secret of how little the Apostles understood of what Jesus said. On the day of Pentecost, the same Peter who had denied him stands up before the crowd and explains the Scriptures with clarity and courage. The Spirit does not bring a new gospel: he makes us remember the words of Jesus and understand them. Today, read a page of the Gospel slowly. Before you begin, ask the Holy Spirit for light; afterwards, keep one sentence to carry with you through the day.
Dia 5 — 11 de maioDay 5 — 11 May · O Espírito reza em nósThe Spirit prays in us
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmity. For we know not what we should pray for as we ought; but the Spirit himself asketh for us with unspeakable groanings. Carta de São Paulo aos Romanos 8,26Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans 8:26
There are days when we do not know how to pray: words fail, the will fails, and tiredness is all we have. Saint Paul says that this is exactly where the Holy Spirit is at work. Leo XIII quotes this verse in his encyclical to say that no one can doubt that the Spirit hears those who call on him, since it was he who inspired these very words. Today, if prayer feels dry, do not give up. Stay a few minutes in silence before God, and let the Spirit pray in you.
Dia 6 — 12 de maioDay 6 — 12 May · O amor derramado nos coraçõesLove poured into our hearts
And hope confoundeth not: because the charity of God is poured forth in our hearts, by the Holy Ghost, who is given to us. Carta de São Paulo aos Romanos 5,5Letter of Saint Paul to the Romans 5:5
The Veni Creator calls the Holy Spirit “living spring, fire, love”. Leo XIII calls him “the life-giving Love”. The love with which we can love God and other people does not come from us alone: it is poured into us at Baptism and Confirmation, and it goes on being poured out every time we ask for it. That is why Christian hope does not let us down. Today, think of someone who is hard to love, and ask the Holy Spirit to love that person through you.
Dia 7 — 13 de maioDay 7 — 13 May · O hóspede da almaThe guest of the soul
By grace, God dwells in the soul of the just as in a temple, in a wholly intimate and singular way. Papa Leão XIII, encíclica Divinum illud munus (1897), n. 9Pope Leo XIII, encyclical Divinum illud munus (1897), no. 9
Saint Paul asks the Corinthians: “Know you not, that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” Leo XIII explains that this presence is not a pretty image: it is real, and theology calls it the indwelling. The Pentecost sequence calls the Holy Spirit the “sweet guest of the soul”. There is no need to go far to find him. Today, stop at some point in the day, close your eyes, and remember who lives in you.
Dia 8 — 14 de maioDay 8 — 14 May · Os sete donsThe seven gifts
And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him: the spirit of wisdom, and of understanding, the spirit of counsel, and of fortitude, the spirit of knowledge, and of godliness. And he shall be filled with the spirit of the fear of the Lord. Livro de Isaías 11,2-3Book of Isaiah 11:2-3
Isaiah is speaking of the Messiah, the rod that would come forth from the root of Jesse. In the Latin translation the Church used for centuries the list has seven names, and from them comes the teaching on the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit, which Christ received in their fullness and which a Christian receives at Baptism and Confirmation. The Pentecost sequence asks: “Give to your faithful, who trust in you, the sacred sevenfold gift.” Today, choose the gift you need most and ask for it by name.
Dia 9 — 15 de maioDay 9 — 15 May · O vento e o fogoThe wind and the fire
And when the days of the Pentecost were accomplished, they were all together in one place: and suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost. Atos dos Apóstolos 2,1-4Acts of the Apostles 2:1-4
This is the last day of waiting. Leo XIII writes that the Church “first came forth into the light of men” on the day of Pentecost, and that, as Christ is the Head of the Church, so the Holy Spirit is her soul. On that day Peter preached, and about three thousand people were baptised. Tomorrow, at the Mass of Pentecost, the Church sings the Veni Sancte Spiritus. Prepare today with a good confession, if you can, and come tomorrow with an open heart.

Ao Espírito SantoTo the Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit, Lord and giver of life, Love of the Father and the Son: like the Apostles in the Upper Room, with Mary the mother of Jesus, I wait for you. Come and dwell in me as in a temple. Give light to what is dark, warm what is cold, set straight what is crooked. Give me your seven gifts, so that I may know Jesus, keep his words and bear witness to him where I live. Receive what I entrust to you today.

About the texts. The Scripture verses in English are from the Douay-Rheims (Challoner), in the public domain; in Portuguese they are my own translation from the Latin Vulgate. The quotation for the third day is slightly abridged, marked [...]. The line of Leo XIII (day 7) and the passages of his quoted on days 5, 6 and 9 are my own translation from the Latin original of the encyclical Divinum illud munus (9 May 1897). The verses of the Veni Creator Spiritus, a hymn whose text is known from the ninth century and is usually ascribed to Rabanus Maurus, and of the sequence Veni Sancte Spiritus, from the late twelfth or early thirteenth century and of uncertain authorship, are my own unrhymed and abridged translation from the Latin. The antiphon “Come, Holy Spirit” and the closing prayer are the Church’s traditional ones. The prayer to the Holy Spirit was composed for this novena. The image is Juan Bautista Maíno’s Pentecost (17th century, Prado Museum, Madrid), in the public domain.
