NovenaNovena
Cristo ReiChrist the King
A data muda a cada ano: é sempre o último domingo antes do Advento.13 to 21 November 2026 — the nine days that close on the eve of the Solemnity of Christ the King, Sunday 22 November. The date moves each year: it is always the last Sunday before Advent.
Desde a reforma do calendário de 1969, a solenidade de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo, Rei do Universo, fecha o ano litúrgico, no último domingo antes do Advento.
On 11 December 1925, at the close of a Holy Year, Pope Pius XI published the encyclical Quas primas and instituted the feast of Christ the King. He explained why he wanted a feast, and not just one more document: documents reach a few and speak once; feasts reach everyone and speak every year, for ever. He set it on the last Sunday of October. Since the reform of the calendar in 1969, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, closes the liturgical year, on the last Sunday before Advent.
This novena is prayed from 13 to 21 November 2026, the nine days before the feast, which this year falls on Sunday 22 November. The date moves each year, as the start of Advent does. The prayer is the same on all nine days and is at the foot of the page. It includes the Act of Consecration of the Human Race to Jesus Christ the King, which Pius XI ordered to be renewed every year on the day of the feast: praying it over these nine days is a good way to prepare to say it from the heart on the Sunday.
The nine days follow the life of the King. They begin with the prophecy of Daniel and the angel’s message to Mary, pass through the entry into Jerusalem, the conversation with Pilate and the throne of the Cross, stop three times at Pius XI’s words on Christ’s reign within us, and end with the King who returns to judge and who hides in the least of his brethren. The quotations are from Scripture and from Quas primas.

Dia 1 — 13 de novembroDay 1 — 13 November · Um reino que não passaA kingdom that does not pass away
I beheld therefore in the vision of the night, and lo, one like the son of man came with the clouds of heaven […]. And he gave him power, and glory, and a kingdom: and all peoples, tribes and tongues shall serve him: his power is an everlasting power that shall not be taken away.
Daniel saw the kingdoms of the world go by like beasts, one after another, and then he saw something else: one like a son of man, coming with the clouds, who receives a kingdom without end. Jesus often called himself the Son of Man, and before the Sanhedrin, on the night he was condemned, he took up this vision again: the Son of Man will come on the clouds of heaven. Begin the novena by looking at what passes and what remains. Give the King today what you are afraid of losing, and ask for a heart that leans on what does not pass away.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the most High; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of David his father; and he shall reign in the house of Jacob for ever. And of his kingdom there shall be no end. Evangelho de São Lucas 1,32-33Gospel of Luke 1:32-33
The first announcement of the King was made to a young woman of Nazareth, in a poor house, far from any palace. The angel speaks of a throne and a kingdom, and Mary answers with a single question and then with her yes. Every Sunday we repeat the angel’s words in the Creed: “and his kingdom will have no end”. Christ’s kingdom began like that, hidden in a mother’s womb. Ask Our Lady today to teach you to receive the King as she received him: without understanding everything, but saying yes.
Tell ye the daughter of Sion: Behold thy king cometh to thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of her that is used to the yoke. Evangelho de São Mateus 21,5 (Zacarias 9,9)Gospel of Matthew 21:5 (Zechariah 9:9)
A few days before his Passion, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a colt. Matthew sees in it the fulfilment of Zechariah’s prophecy: the king comes meek. The crowd spread their cloaks on the road and shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David”; a few days later, another crowd would call for his death. He knew it, and he went in all the same. Open today the gates of your city, your house and your day to this King who does not force his way in. And ask for the grace not to change your cry with the crowd.
Dia 4 — 16 de novembroDay 4 — 16 November · Diante de PilatosBefore Pilate
Respondeu Jesus: O meu reino não é deste mundo. […] Jesus answered: My kingdom is not of this world. […] Thou sayest that I am a king. For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice. Evangelho de São João 18,36-37Gospel of John 18:36-37
When the crowd wanted to make him king after the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus withdrew to the mountain alone. Now, bound and standing before the Roman governor, he does not deny that he is a king. Pius XI recalls both scenes to show that this kingdom is above all spiritual: it is not won with soldiers; we enter it by faith, by Baptism and by conversion. His throne is the truth, and his subjects are those who hear his voice. Ask today for the grace to hear it among so many other voices.
Dia 5 — 17 de novembroDay 5 — 17 November · O trono da cruzThe throne of the Cross
And he said to Jesus: Lord, remember me when thou shalt come into thy kingdom. And Jesus said to him: Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise. Evangelho de São Lucas 23,42-43Gospel of Luke 23:42-43
Pilate had the charge written above the Cross, in Hebrew, Greek and Latin: “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews”. It was meant as mockery, and it was true. The rulers mocked, the soldiers mocked, one of the criminals railed at him. The other looked at the man nailed beside him and saw a king on the way to his kingdom. He asked only to be remembered, and was given Paradise that same day. Today, tell him in the good thief’s words what you have no courage to tell anyone else.
Dia 6 — 18 de novembroDay 6 — 18 November · Comprados por alto preçoBought at a great price
What could be more joyful and more sweet for us to think upon than this: that Christ rules over us not only by birthright but also by a right acquired, that is, by redemption? Pio XI, encíclica Quas primas (1925), n. 13Pius XI, encyclical Quas primas (1925), n. 13
Pius XI explains that Christ is King by being who he is, God made man. But he adds a second title, which he calls sweeter: he bought us. And he goes on to quote Saint Peter: we were redeemed “not with corruptible things as gold or silver”, but “with the precious blood of Christ”. We do not belong to a king who conquered us by force, but to one who paid for us with his own life. Give thanks today for that price. And hand over to him, as something already his, the intention of this novena.
Dia 7 — 19 de novembroDay 7 — 19 November · Que ele reine em mimThat he may reign in me
He must reign, then, in the mind of man, which ought to hold firmly to revealed truths and to the teachings of Christ; he must reign in the will, which ought to obey the laws and precepts of God; he must reign in the heart, which ought to love God above all things and cleave to him alone; he must reign in the body and its members. Pio XI, encíclica Quas primas (1925), n. 33 (trecho)Pius XI, encyclical Quas primas (1925), n. 33 (excerpt)
A mente, a vontade, o coração, o corpo. Ofereça hoje a ele, sem medo, a parte de você que você guarda para si.Having spoken of nations, Pius XI comes down to what is most personal: no part of us lies outside this kingdom. The mind, the will, the heart, the body. It makes a good examination of conscience for today: in which of these places do I still not let Christ in? And the Pope ends with a wish: that we bear Christ’s yoke “not grudgingly, but gladly, lovingly”. The Lord himself said that his yoke is sweet and his burden light. Offer him today, without fear, the part of yourself you keep for yourself.
Dia 8 — 20 de novembroDay 8 — 20 November · O Rei nos pequeninosThe King in the least
Then shall the king say to them that shall be on his right hand: Come, ye blessed of my Father, possess you the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. […] Amen I say to you, as long as you did it to one of these my least brethren, you did it to me. Evangelho de São Mateus 25,34.40Gospel of Matthew 25:34, 40
Here, speaking of the last judgement, Jesus calls himself simply “the King”. And he does it to say where he is hidden: in the hungry, the stranger, the sick, the prisoner. The last judgement does not ask how many titles we gave Christ, but whether we recognised him in those who had nothing to give us. The kingdom he promises already begins in the works of mercy. Think today of one real person in whom the King is waiting for you, and do something for them before the day is over.
Dia 9 — 21 de novembroDay 9 — 21 November · A paz de Cristo no Reino de CristoThe peace of Christ in the Kingdom of Christ
We gave warning that the peace of Christ is to be sought in the Kingdom of Christ. Pio XI, encíclica Quas primas (1925), n. 1, retomando a sua primeira encíclica, Ubi arcano (1922)Pius XI, encyclical Quas primas (1925), n. 1, recalling his first encyclical, Ubi arcano (1922)
Pius XI wrote a few years after the First World War, in a world still wounded by war, looking for peace in treaties and conferences. His answer fits into one phrase, which he carried from his first encyclical into this one: the peace of Christ, in the Kingdom of Christ. Tomorrow is the feast, and soon after Advent begins. The liturgical year ends by looking towards the one the Apocalypse calls “King of kings and Lord of lords”. Ask today for the peace that only he gives: for your home, for those you love and for the whole world.

A Cristo ReiTo Christ the King
Lord Jesus Christ, King of the universe, to whom the Father gave power and glory and a kingdom, and who reigned from the Cross: I acknowledge you as my King and my Lord. Reign in my mind, that I may believe; in my will, that I may obey; in my heart, that I may love you above all things. Remember me, as you remembered the good thief. You who came to serve and not to be served, look on what I bring before you in these nine days and grant me, if it is for your glory and the good of my soul, the grace I ask of you:

Ato de consagração do gênero humano a Jesus Cristo ReiAct of Consecration of the Human Race to Jesus Christ the King
Most sweet Jesus, Redeemer of the human race, look upon us, humbly prostrate before you. We are yours, and yours we wish to be; and, that we may be more firmly united to you, behold, today each one of us freely consecrates himself to your most Sacred Heart. Many indeed have never known you; many, despising your commandments, have rejected you. Have mercy on them all, most kind Jesus, and draw every one of them to your holy Heart.
Be King, O Lord, not only of the faithful who have never forsaken you, but also of the prodigal children who have left you: grant that they may soon return to their Father’s house, lest they perish of wretchedness and hunger. Be King of those who are deceived by error or kept apart by discord; call them back to the harbour of truth and the unity of faith, so that soon there may be one fold and one shepherd.
Grant, O Lord, to your Church freedom, secure and unharmed; grant to all nations the tranquillity of order; bring it about that from pole to pole of the earth one voice may resound: Praise be to the divine Heart, through which our salvation was won; to it be glory and honour for ever.
Amém.
Amen.

About the texts. The Scripture passages come, in Portuguese, from the Tradução Brasileira (1917) and, in English, from the Douay-Rheims (1899 edition), both in the public domain; on day 5 the Portuguese follows the older Greek text (“Jesus, lembra-te”) and the English follows the Vulgate (“Lord, remember me”). The words of Pius XI and the Act of Consecration are my own translations from the Latin: the encyclical Quas primas (1925), in the Latin text on the Vatican website, and the Act in the form now given in the Enchiridion Indulgentiarum (4th edition, 1999, grant 2). Those who recite it publicly on the day of the solemnity, under the usual conditions, may gain a plenary indulgence. The opening prayer was composed for this novena. “Christ conquers, Christ reigns, Christ commands” is the ancient acclamation of the Laudes Regiae.
