You will surely remember that scene from The Passion of the Christ. Yes — it portrayed the mortal agony that Jesus endured on the Mount of Olives. And while Jesus was passing through that divine moment, in which his humanity pleaded, "Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me; yet not my will, but Thine be done", the tempter prowled around him and urged him to give up everything.

Notice how the devil is at once cunning and shameless, for he had the audacity to tempt our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Aware of the work that Jesus had to accomplish for humanity, he wasted no time and sought to place himself in the middle of God’s plan to save and rescue mankind.

If he tempted Christ — who is God made man, the most holy, beautiful and perfect man ever to walk this earth, who took on our nature in order to raise us up — imagine how much he also tempts us, men who at baptism receive the grace of God and have the possibility of becoming like Jesus Christ!?

Satan works through his diabolical suggestions (temptations) to make us lost, because he knows the work that God wants to accomplish in humanity through us!

He acts out of fear, because if we are united to God, imitating Jesus, moved by the strength of the Holy Spirit, we will be a bomb dropped on hell, cooperating in the plan of salvation that God has for humanity through the blood of Christ.

If he does not try to stop us, and instead does everything he can against us, it is a sign that we have thrown ourselves headlong into God’s scheme and are interfering — greatly — with the devil’s scheme, obtaining salvation, grace and deliverance for many people.

Satan, your scheme is going to be broken today, because whoever is reading this chapter is a people violent in prayer, filled with the Holy Spirit, who — united to God, nourished and sustained by the one and eternal sacrifice of the wedding feast of the Lamb — is ready to plunder hell, to carry souls to heaven, and to be an instrument of the power and glory of God upon the earth, bringing down what belongs to heaven already into this world.

It is because of such men and women that we can be bold and proclaim HEAVEN ON EARTH! Alleluia!

What does God’s scheme mean? How do we enter it? And what about the devil’s scheme? How do we get out of it? What does the "Spiritual Battle" label have to do with this theme? Let us go at full speed and dive in headlong, so that this may not be just one more formation and a lot of content for nothing, but that it may serve as encouragement, strength and courage to make us persevere and fight to the end — to the very last consequences — for the Kingdom of God, for heaven which is our home, for the values and the will of God in our lives and in the world.

In the rhythm of the Spirit, let us set out to be direct and concise in this reflection. We will explain what we are referring to when we use the word ‘scheme’, define it, and give practical examples, so that in everything we may be converted to the scheme of the Lord.

The devil’s scheme is to steal, kill and destroy (cf. Jn 10:10). First of all he steals what most stirs strength in us, which is the certainty, the assurance of the Word of God. That is why Jesus drew attention to this detail when he was in the desert, saying that we must feed on the Word of the Lord (cf. Mt 4:4); and also in the Parable of the Sower, where the devil — represented by the bird — steals the Word of God from the soil of our hearts.

"He said: A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell along the path; and the birds came and ate it up. Hear, then, the meaning of the parable of the sower: when anyone heareth the word of the Kingdom and understandeth it not, the Evil One cometh and snatcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he that received the seed by the wayside." (Mt 13:4, 18-19)

If Satan manages to take the strength of the Word out of a Christian’s heart, he steals his strength, his grace to walk firmly. The steps of someone who has lost the strength of the Word within himself are sluggish, far too slow, mistaken and uncertain.

Such a person does not know what to think, what is right, what is fitting, what to do; he stays in darkness, walking at the mercy of his tastes, his passions, and everything else that our three enemies teach us.

The devil is the agent of evil, a fallen angel who — because he wanted to take God’s place and would neither serve nor adore Him — was cast down from heaven by Saint Michael the Archangel and founded hell.

"There was a battle in heaven. Michael and his angels fought with the Dragon. And the Dragon fought, and his angels; but they did not prevail, neither was their place found any more in heaven. And that great Dragon was cast out, that old Serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, who seduceth the whole world. And he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you that dwell therein. Woe to the earth and to the sea, because the Devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, knowing that he hath but a short time." (Rev 12:7-9, 12)

He has already come down with his scheme set up and ready to act. He inspires and causes evil in the world through a corrupted fashion, a way of living entirely contrary to what the Kingdom of God requires of those who are fellow citizens of the saints in heaven — a spoiled, impure, filthy and deformed mentality.

This aeon-world, influenced by the devil, has a scheme to steal the life that is in us, which is God’s gift to every living being. Many think that death is the will of God, but it is not. The devil kills us through sin, which is also his food (cf. Gen 3:14).

The strength the devil has is to suggest bad things, as he always does — and even to suggest good things at the wrong time — so as to act by shattering the life of grace of God’s chosen ones, which is you and me (cf. Mt 24:24). He is the antichrist who works in the world with signs and wonders to deceive us.

We already know that in God’s action a covenant is always required: a commitment, a mature attitude of accepting what He wants for us and doing what we can to remain in it. Therefore, we can identify what belongs to the devil’s scheme and that we sometimes carry within us (sin) as though it were a value.

For example: a "hook-up" is a relationship between two people with no commitment; you don’t need a ring or to be dating the person — just share a few kisses and enjoy the moment... There, it’s over! One more person to add to your list of no-strings hook-ups is an outward sign of commitment that reveals you are in the devil’s scheme. Do you see?

In the same way we can mention fornication (sex before marriage) and adultery (sex outside marriage). No need to marry (much less in the Church — that’s a thing of the past), just have sex and have as many sexual relations as you want, with as many people as you want, and follow the devil’s script to go to hell; or even, having made the commitment to someone in marriage, sleep with other people because "eating rice and beans every day gets boring." Isn’t that how the world teaches it?

We begin with sexuality because it is one of the things that most destroys a person’s life, that most destroys the image and likeness of God — which is what we are — turning us into a caricature of the devil. The more we move away from God, from prayer, from meditation and from the things above, the more we come to resemble the world, taking on the face of the devil, turning into beasts that merely follow their instincts, worse than the animals.

Saint Augustine said: "Whoever does not resemble God resembles the devil." Choose whom you wish to resemble!

The devil’s scheme is one of disobedience and opposition to the commandments of the Lord. Whoever is part of and faithful to that scheme knows that God asks us in the Bible to be watchful:

"Watch ye, and pray, that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." (Mk 14:38)

But on purpose, these people do not watch; and besides not praying, they choose to enter into temptation, keeping the flesh always ready for every occasion of sin while their spirit is weak. The reality you are feeding the most will always win — whether it is your body, your soul or your spirit.

In the devil’s scheme you must not love God above all things; you don’t even need to love Him or to seek Him — but if you do love Him, it can be in any old way; if there happens to be time left over for God in your life, because you are already very busy, and you can’t waste time on things that aren’t so important!

Treating God’s name any old way, not respecting sacred things, neither keeping nor caring about sanctified days such as the Lord’s Day, Sunday; dishonouring father and mother, killing, lying constantly, coveting the goods of others, being envious, being false and two-faced, living according to the appetites and impulses of the flesh — these are some of the rules that many, even within the Church, are living by.

The devil’s scheme is easy to follow. It is a constant descent that keeps leading you toward a life that is ever more empty, meaningless, hopeless, without great achievements, without commitment, without worries, with immediate and cheap solutions... Why live a life thinking about tomorrow!? The thing is today! Life is now! Make the most of it while you can! The devil, the world, and the sin that dwells in you thank you for it!

How many have been hooked by this easy and cheap scheme and are already living hell here on earth! When they die, it will only be a matter of passing over to eternal hell, where they will experience in fullness what they were already experiencing in a disordered life here on Earth.

Without thinking of the consequences, without caring about others or even about themselves, without paying any heed to what God asks, without pity or mercy, without charity and without self-respect... How sad is the life of someone who has joined, signed up for, and lives in that diabolical scheme!

Many were hooked by having (avarice, ostentation, theft, drug-trafficking, injustice, etc.), others by pleasure (pornography, masturbation, homosexuality, lesbianism, no-strings sex, gluttony, narcotics, delirious sensations, etc.), and others by power (positions, politics, pride, vanity, greed, etc.).

Some have not yet been hooked, but little by little they are thinking of giving in to a sin, a vice, or a momentary pleasure. And the devil is a specialist in this area of waiting and biding his time patiently until people choose to fall into sin — whether on a bad day or a good one, during the day or at night, on an easy occasion or even a difficult one.

Engrave these two sentences on your heart and you will never be hooked:

1st) The devil is a specialist in creating situations so that we may sin, even in secret, without "anyone" finding out. He makes us forget that the eyes and the presence of God are in every place...

2nd) The devil is a fisherman who never tires and sometimes does not even change the bait with which he tempts us and wants to hook us. He waits patiently for time to pass so that, sooner or later, we give in to the charms of sin and fall into temptation — making us forget that sin will imprison us...

Reflect a little and discover for yourself the great reality of these two statements. The devil has a very clear scheme and plan regarding us. He wants to make us lost and to drag us to hell! Those who already have a signed contract are already living with him; but whoever is a Christian and is walking in the grace of God is a nuisance to him. That is why he summons all of hell to bring down and destroy such people.

Every day the devil summons the demons in hell and devises a new scheme with the same old temptations, to make those who belong to God fall into sin, drift away from the Church, and break their communion with God.

He is able to create situations where a person alone can have his pleasure satisfied without anyone knowing — whether in front of a TV or a computer, in a motel, at a party, or even in Church. The important thing is to keep up appearances! And the fellow falls for it like a sitting duck. Only after some time will he become aware (if he ever does) that he was deceived. And the eyes of God were upon that person...

"The eyes of the Lord in every place behold the good and the evil." (Prov 15:3)

King David teaches us, and also makes us reflect on this:

"Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy face? If I ascend into heaven, thou art there: if I descend into hell, thou art present. If I take my wings early in the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea: even there also shall thy hand lead me: and thy right hand shall hold me. And I said: Perhaps darkness shall cover me: and night shall be my light in my pleasures. But darkness shall not be dark to thee, and night shall be light as day: the darkness thereof, and the light thereof, are alike to thee." (Ps 138:7-12)

One of the strangest and at the same time most spectacular things the devil does is to tempt us always with the same temptations — and we always fall for the same things.

We have to stop being beasts; we have to be firm in the faith and not let time, or anything else whatsoever, take the power of the Word of God — which is unchangeable and eternal — out of us. Only then will we be able to resist to the end every kind of temptation and grubby scheme.

But this requires a strong experience with God, a firm resolve, a decided intention, and a sustained decision grounded and upheld by the strength of the Word of God, a burning desire for God, and a prayer so violent as to tear open heaven and seize the glory of God that dwells there, down to the earth.

"From the days of John the Baptist until now, the Kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent bear it away." (Mt 11:12)

This is for whoever wants to break free from sin, from the false mentality of the ungodly that reigns in society, and to be set free from the chains — small or great — of hell; to come out of every kind of pact, consecration, commitment, or scheme of the devil.

You must wage a true war, a deep and arduous spiritual battle against the prince of darkness, against those bad habits and vices that were holding you captive. You must take possession of the power of the Word of God, which assures us:

"If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he also is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, (God) is faithful and just, to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all iniquity." (1 Jn 1:6-9)

If you are in any of these situations, entangled in some demonic scheme, do not be afraid or ashamed to break free as quickly as possible by the power of the blood of Christ Jesus. The power of the blood of Christ can set you free from anything, from any sin, from any situation.

Break free by saying so in your own words, in the prayer at the end, and make the resolution to enter God’s scheme, for He has the best in store for us. God’s scheme is happiness guaranteed for certain in this life, and a life of eternal joy and gladness in heaven.

God’s scheme is to give back the life that was stolen, to give life in abundance (cf. Jn 10:10), and to restore what was destroyed. Jesus is life itself; He gives himself to us in the Eucharist, in which the miracle of transubstantiation takes place, in which the bread and wine are transformed into his Body and his Blood at every Mass.

He himself said this at the Last Supper, when he gave his final counsels and important warnings to his apostles, before bringing his mission on Earth to completion:

"Jesus saith to him: I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No man cometh to the Father, but by me." (Jn 14:6)

He is the way along which we must tread — a short and narrow way, perhaps far too tight, but it is the one that will save us, even though few choose it.

"Enter ye in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leadeth to destruction, and many there are who go in thereat. How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!" (Mt 7:13-14)

Few are those who find it, because not everyone wants the presence of Christ in their lives: even if they say yes with words, they deny him in their attitudes and in the way they act.

He is the truth that sets us free from the weight of sin:

"Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed in him: If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Amen, amen, I say unto you: that whosoever committeth sin, is the servant of sin. If therefore the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed." (Jn 8:31-32, 34, 36)

And from the spoiled strength of that aeon mentality — by the power of his Holy Spirit, renewing us each day:

"And be not conformed to this world; but be reformed in the newness of your mind, that you may prove what is the good, and the acceptable, and the perfect will of God." (Rom 12:2)

He, the eternal Word, the Word of God (cf. Jn 1:1), was made flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary and became man when the fullness of time had come (cf. Gal 4:4), to save us from the devil’s scheme that wanted to drag us to hell with him. That is why He is preparing a place for us in the Father’s House:

"In my Father’s house there are many mansions. If not, I would have told you: because I go to prepare a place for you. And if I shall go, and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and will take you to myself; that where I am, you also may be." (Jn 14:2-3)

He wants us with Him! Why, then, do we live far from God and refuse the Lord’s scheme for our life?

He came to enlighten every living being, to bring light and hope to the downcast, courage and strength to the weakened, grace and joy to the saddened, peace and goodness to the desperate, boldness and holiness to sinners. But the greatest sadness is to read, hear, and swallow what Saint John tells us in his Gospel about Jesus, our light:

"[The Word] was the true light, which enlighteneth every man that cometh into this world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not." (Jn 1:9-11)

How hard it is to think and reflect on what is said in the Sacred Scriptures — that Jesus CAME UNTO HIS OWN, BUT HIS OWN RECEIVED HIM NOT! Do you know why we do not receive the Lord Jesus? Because many of us are following the devil’s scheme precisely, to the letter; we are letting ourselves be ensnared by his plans, and we accept what he offers us.

Jesus said: "Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away." (Mt 24:35) — but we are foolish and we let the devil steal that strength which the Word stirs within us: when we disbelieve it, when we doubt, and when we lend our ears to the news, to gossip, to the things that happen in the world, but pay no attention or credence to the sweet Word that God speaks in the Scriptures and also to our heart.

Through this Word faith is generated and nourished in our heart (cf. Rom 10:17); this Word is living and pierces our soul and heart:

"For the word of God is living and effectual, and more piercing than any two-edged sword; and reaching unto the division of the soul and the spirit, of the joints also and the marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Neither is there any creature invisible in his sight: but all things are naked and open to his eyes, to whom our speech is." (Heb 4:12-13)

This Word is useful for exhorting and for leading us to salvation.

"But continue thou in those things which thou hast learned, and which have been committed to thee: knowing of whom thou hast learned them; and because from thy infancy thou hast known the holy scriptures, which can instruct thee to salvation, by the faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture, inspired of God, is profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice: that the man of God may be perfect, furnished to every good work." (2 Tim 3:14-17)

See what an interesting thing: the things that are part of the devil’s scheme have no depth — they are ephemeral, passing, transitory, superficial; whereas the things of God are deep, lasting, and eternal.

Many people have neither firmness nor constancy in the faith, in what they believe or cease to believe. Saint Paul teaches his son in the faith, Timothy, to persevere and remain firm in what he learned and believed from childhood — whereas the world leads us to have a faith of convenience.

If you hear a discourse that pleases you on a certain street corner that goes by the name of "church," you attend. If you hear something that displeases you, you switch — no matter how long you have been there. Change, and change again, until you find a place that pleases you. In other words: is it God who has to please you, and He who has to enter your scheme, and not you who enters His?

But one thing is certain: God’s scheme is already set up! He sent his Son into the world to save it. Jesus gave his very self — instituting the Eucharist — and his mother, Mary Most Holy, in the final moments while He was here on Earth. This is his testament!

And in dying he founded his Church, paying for it with the price of his precious blood poured out on the cross (cf. Acts 20:28). The testament and the greatest riches of Christ are in the Church. And whoever believes in the Word of God knows that it is in the Catholic Church that the fullness of the faith is found, the fullness of the Word of God, with the 73 books (Martin Luther was not able to remove books from the authentic Bible), with the sacraments and the infallible truth!

Let us pray with the Word of God, which will be strength and impact for our prayer:

"There is now therefore no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the spirit of life, in Christ Jesus, hath delivered me from the law of sin and of death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and of sin, hath condemned sin in the flesh; that the justification of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the spirit. For they that are according to the flesh, mind the things that are of the flesh; but they that are according to the spirit, mind the things that are of the spirit. For the wisdom of the flesh is death; but the wisdom of the spirit is life and peace. Because the wisdom of the flesh is an enemy to God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither can it be. And they who are in the flesh, cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. And if Christ be in you, the body indeed is dead, because of sin; but the spirit liveth, because of justification. And if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead, dwell in you; he that raised up Jesus Christ from the dead, shall quicken also your mortal bodies, because of his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you shall die: but if by the Spirit you mortify the deeds of the flesh, you shall live. For whosoever are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." (Rom 8:1-14)

"Mighty and holy God, I open myself to your power and your grace in this moment. I want to confess and humble myself before You, for I am nothing but a shameless sinner, a person who knows the truth but who at times prefers to live in the lie by his own liking, because I am bound to the devil’s scheme, because of things that happened in my past, in my family tree, and that will not let me be free.

Help me, Lord, with your Holy Spirit. Pour out in abundance in this moment a Spirit of deliverance from every physical, psychic, and spiritual slavery. Come to my aid, Lord, with your help, because on my own I cannot set myself free. On my own I am not able to do anything. I need your Spirit. I want to be bold and anticipate the Pentecost that will be lived in your Holy Church, and to beg that there happen now in my life this new Pentecost, that it may come to impact my life and my heart.

Manifest, Holy Spirit, your anointing and your goodness; manifest your great love, Lord; manifest your holy and strong hand on my behalf, because I need You. Heal me, Lord, of every infirmity, of every false sickness, of every prison and captivity that has kept me bound in this life of sins that I am living, of always giving in to temptation. I want to be free in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom I proclaim my Lord and my Saviour, by your action, Spirit of God.

Beloved Jesus, come and set me free by the power of your blood, of your wounds, of your cross, of your Word. The Lord said that if the Son sets us free we would be free indeed. I cannot bear any longer to live imprisoned in sin, because I gave myself over to it, Lord; but today, moved by these words and by your Spirit, I want to break free. I renounce, in the name of Jesus Christ, every spirit of prostitution, of adultery, of fornication, of masturbation, of homosexuality and lesbianism, of impurity and of sexual aberrations. Set me free from all promiscuity, from every spirit of a distorted view of my body, of the world, and of God.

Come, Jesus, with the marks of the passion, to touch me; come with your wounded hands to touch my heart; come and restore me. Saint Augustine said that the disfigured Lord Jesus configures me, and I believe in this truth. That is why I ask You, Jesus, to come and restore me and to take from me every likeness I have had with the devil. I no longer want to be a caricature or a puppet in the hand of the devil, but I want to be an instrument of your Spirit. I do not want the flesh to govern my life, but your Spirit to take the reins now.

I hand over to You my mind, my conscious, subconscious, and unconscious, that the Lord may purify them with your holy blood. Wash and cleanse my thoughts, the way I look at people. Wash my mouth and my heart, because I no longer want to utter evil words, lies, curses, insults, and things that do not please the Lord. I want to be pure as a child... Remake me, Lord!

Like David, who, after he came to himself — after committing the sin with Bathsheba and having his servant Uriah put to death — wept and pleaded before the ark of the covenant, now before your presence (if you can, go and prostrate yourself before the tabernacle to pray and ask this grace of the Lord) I prostrate myself and want to weep for my sins, begging You to come and wash me of all iniquity and to purify me of all that sin has done in me. It was against You that I sinned, Lord. I did only what is evil and, seeking my own pleasure, I let myself be deceived and enslaved. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and give me again a spirit of firmness, because I have grown weak, Lord. It is no longer I myself who live, but sin. Cast me not away from your face, and take not your Spirit from me, but pour it out upon me as you poured it out at Pentecost upon the disciples. Through the heart of Mary, come and fill me with a powerful anointing that may lead me to take on a commitment with You, Lord God. Restore to me the joy of the salvation that I lost. Sustain me with a generous will. I want to repair my errors and sins by teaching the wicked the straight path, so that sinners and those who are farther away may return to You, Lord.

I want to exalt your mercy. Open my lips to proclaim and glorify your holy name, which sets me free, Jesus. Glory to the Lord! I say it shouting and full of joy: GLORY TO GOD! This is my sacrifice and my worship of praise: a humbled and prostrate heart, which the Lord will not reject.

Come, sweet Spirit, and seal in me all this anointing, this grace, this deliverance, this power, and this wonder that is to be God’s. I take it on and I enter the scheme of the Lord, my God. Alleluia! Pour out holiness upon my home, my work, my school/college, my girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife, my sexuality, my mind, my soul, my spirit, my heart. I give You freedom to fill me with all the love of the Father and of the Son, setting me ablaze with your fire.

Amen, Lord! I take possession of all the grace that is to be yours, to belong to You, to let myself be led by the Spirit and not by the appetites of the flesh. Glory for your compassion. Prepare a priest so that I may confess and return to communion in your Church, Lord Jesus. I make the decision to return. I return to You, and I want to seek You and live with You, to begin again, to have life in abundance once more. Thank you so much, Lord! I adore You! I praise You and I surrender to You all that I am, for I believe that in You I am more than a conqueror. Thank you for your scheme, your plan of love, for conquering sin, the world, and the devil for me, giving me the grace to conquer as well. Glory! Amen!"

"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth. For the first heaven and the first earth was gone, and the sea is now no more. And I John saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice from the throne, saying: Behold the tabernacle of God with men, and he will dwell with them. And they shall be his people; and God himself with them shall be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes: and death shall be no more, nor mourning, nor crying, nor sorrow shall be any more, for the former things are passed away. And he that sat on the throne, said: Behold, I make all things new. And he said to me: Write, for these words are most faithful and true. And he said to me: It is done. I am Alpha and Omega; the beginning and the end. To him that thirsteth, I will give of the fountain of the water of life, freely. He that shall overcome shall possess these things, and I will be his God; and he shall be my son." (Rev 21:1-7)

Take on this great truth and, with jubilation, proclaim in your own story that what was old has passed away — all things are made new, because our God, who is seated on the throne, makes all things new. Death, sin, the world, the devil, the flesh, and every condition of slavery have been conquered, have been overcome, and cannot separate us from the love of this God who is madly in love and cannot bear to see us far from Him.
