Ele morreu a 23 de setembro de 1968, às duas e meia da madrugada, com duas palavras na boca: «Gesù, Maria». Tinha oitenta e um anos, e cinquenta deles foram vividos com feridas abertas nas mãos, nos pés e no lado.
He died on 23 September 1968, at half past two in the morning, with two words in his mouth: “Gesù, Maria.” He was eighty-one, and fifty of those years had been lived with open wounds in his hands, his feet and his side.
Esta novena reza-se nos nove dias que antecedem a festa. A oração é sempre a mesma — é assim que uma novena funciona: a mesma coisa pedida nove vezes, até deixar de ser um pedido e passar a ser uma disposição. Está aqui embaixo, inteira.
This novena is prayed on the nine days before the feast. The prayer is the same every day — that is how a novena works: the same thing asked nine times, until it stops being a request and becomes a disposition. It is here below, whole.
O que muda é a companhia. Cada dia traz uma frase dele, e uma linha da vida dele que explica por que ele a disse. Não são nove orações diferentes: são nove dias com o mesmo homem.
What changes is the company. Each day carries a sentence of his own, and a line from his life that explains why he said it. They are not nine different prayers: they are nine days with the same man.

A novena começa no dia da Cruz, e não por acaso: as chagas que ele carregou cinquenta anos são as de Cristo, e ele nunca as chamou de privilégio — chamava-as «a minha humilhação».The novena opens on the day of the Cross, and not by accident: the wounds he carried for fifty years were Christ’s, and he never called them a privilege. He called them “my humiliation”.

Entre 1931 e 1933 proibiram-no de celebrar Missa em público e de confessar. Não escreveu uma carta em sua defesa. Não mobilizou ninguém.Between 1931 and 1933 he was forbidden to celebrate Mass in public or to hear confessions. He wrote not one letter in his own defence. He mobilised nobody.

Se há um sinal que vale mais do que os estigmas, é este: qualquer um inventa um prodígio; obedecer calado durante dois anos, tendo razão, é obra de santo.That was his answer when they asked how he bore those two years. If there is one sign worth more than the stigmata, it is this one: anybody can invent a wonder; obeying in silence for two years, when you are in the right, is the work of a saint.

Foi numa manhã como esta, há 108 anos, sozinho no coro da igreja velha, depois da Missa. Tinha trinta e um anos. Escreveu ao diretor espiritual: «dei-me conta de que as minhas mãos, os pés e o lado estavam trespassados e a escorrer sangue».It was on a morning like this one, 108 years ago, alone in the choir of the old church after Mass. He was thirty-one. He wrote to his spiritual director: “I became aware that my hands, feet and side were pierced and dripping with blood.”

A 22 de setembro de 1968 celebrou a última Missa, sentado, sem força para se pôr de pé. Morreu antes do amanhecer do dia seguinte. Quando prepararam o corpo, as chagas tinham desaparecido: a pele estava lisa, como se nunca ali tivesse havido nada.On 22 September 1968 he said his last Mass, seated, without the strength to stand. He died before dawn the next day. When the body was prepared, the wounds had gone: the skin was smooth, as though nothing had ever been there.

O Lord, we ask for a boundless confidence and trust in Your divine mercy, and the courage to accept the crosses and sufferings which bring immense goodness to our souls and to that of Your Church.

About the texts. The first prayer is the one Pope St. John Paul II prayed for him. The second circulates everywhere as having been composed by Padre Pio himself; that attribution is much repeated but not documented, so here it stands simply as the prayer of trust that is prayed with him. The sentences on the nine days are his own, and are the same ones held in this site’s collection of saints’ quotes.
