"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." (Gal 5:1)
We need to learn to be free and to remain in this life of freedom with Jesus. We who?
We who have had an experience with Christ, we who feel that our heart belongs to the Church of God, we who know but are far from God's truth, and we who do not know and have not had any experience...
The word of God, which is living, effective, and current, assures us that Jesus frees us from everything: illnesses, sinful situations, misfortunes, and bad things that happen in our history, regardless of the cause... Jesus never looks at anyone's past. See some examples:
"And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were set free." (Lk 6:18)
"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." (Jn 8:36)
Some people have a mistaken view of the word freedom... What is freedom to you? Perhaps if you ask some teenagers, they might answer: "Go to the red-light district!"
If you ask a person who is in prison, they will say: "Getting out of here is freedom for me!"
If you ask someone who was born into a traditional family, they might answer: "Do whatever I want; go out and come back whenever I want, etc. I am trapped in this family!"
Some people think that if they can do this or that, they will be free, but what then? Many don't think about what it will be like after they do such a thing. Why?
Because the person's life will be conditioned by it! For example: A teenager who wanted to go to the red-light district. He won't be satisfied going once! He will want to go again and again, to the point where it becomes an addiction!
The same thing happens with someone who thinks about drinking to be free. "Getting wasted." They might start thinking that way, but after a few times, the person becomes addicted to drinking. Then they can no longer live without being drunk.
And in the same way, someone who uses drugs to be free, as a form of rebellion against their family. And after they become addicted?
What I mean by these examples is that sin does not satisfy. It's no use seeking false freedom in sex, in drunkenness, in drugs... What our heart needs is God!
The proof of this is that we will never be satisfied when we seek sin! When you start, it's never the same thing again, and you will always have to increase the dose to feel the same thing and have the same effects!
There is an emptiness within us! You who are reading, have no doubt about this! This emptiness that exists within us was placed there by God. This emptiness is the place that HE must occupy within us. If God does not occupy His place in the emptiness of our heart, we will never be satisfied with anything! Either we allow God to occupy His place, or we will suffer trying to fill our heart with all kinds of things and people, and it will never do any good.
See the example of Saint Augustine, a well-known thinker of the Middle Ages who lived in brothels and a disordered life, before knowing the Only One who can fill what he tried to fill with prostitutes...
"Too late have I loved Thee,
O Beauty so ancient and so new,
too late have I loved Thee!
Behold, Thou wast within me,
and I outside, seeking Thee!
Deformed, I rushed upon these beautiful things which Thou hast made.
Thou wast with me, and I was not with Thee!
That kept me far from Thee
Which would not exist,
If it did not exist in Thee.
But Thou didst call,
with a voice so strong,
that Thou didst break my deafness!
Thou didst shine, Thou didst gleam,
And at once Thou didst drive away my blindness!
Thou didst exhale Perfume:
I breathed it in, with full lungs, sighing for Thee.
I tasted Thee
And, now, I hunger and thirst for Thee.
Thou didst touch me
And I burned, in the desire for Thy peace."
So does that mean we will never be complete without God? Exactly! Without God, nothing we do, however good it may be, can completely fill us. It's no wonder that people who are living a good life with all the best, materially speaking, betray their spouses, have lovers, etc. Be a lover of God and you will not have this problem in your life!
I mean that the problem of living a life of sin, from a Christian perspective (hence the expression "a life of sin"), is precisely this: each time we will need to dedicate ourselves more and we will spend our whole lives seeking what will never fill us.
Want to know a secret to not spend your life in the illusion of sin -
"In all you do, remember your end, and you will never sin." (Eccl 7:40)
The Bible teaches us that if we do not let ourselves be carried away by the illusions of fashion, television, games, and all current distractions, remembering our end in everything we do, we will be free from the prison of sin.
The freedom we are talking about in this post is the freedom that Jesus offers us. Why?
Because He knows that we are subject to living in sin, we are subject to living in sadness, we are subject to living under a curse, we are subject to being trapped by everything... He wants us to live in holiness, joy, blessing, and freedom... But how?
"Jesus looked at them and said: With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible." (Mt 19:26)
Accept to be set free by Jesus. For us, it is an impossible work to happen. But for God, all things are possible. Do you believe in this word? Then embrace this purpose of being free and live in the freedom of the Lord.
"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." (2 Cor 3:17)
To be free is not to be bound by any physical, psychological, or spiritual conditioning. To be free is to live according to the will of God. To be free is not to worry about fleeting things, because more important than any material good is the heaven that awaits us.
