A Faith Transformed Uma Fé Transformada

At seven, he was taken to a Candomblé ritual — a ceremony of Afro-Brazilian spirit religion — where a mãe de santo (a spirit medium, literally “mother of saint”) laid hands on his head and offered his life to the devil. By thirteen, after years of anger and loneliness, he was ready to end his own life. Aos sete anos, foi levado a um ritual de Candomblé em que uma mãe de santo impôs as mãos sobre sua cabeça e ofereceu sua vida ao demônio. His aunt enrolled him in catechism. Laffayette, his catechist, gave him one instruction: a Catholic must go to Mass. He went. At Mass he was drawn into Messias da Paz, a youth prayer group. On Mother’s Day 2005, a woman dressed as Our Lady hugged him and placed a rose in his hands — and he could not stop crying. Sua tia o matriculou na catequese. In October 2005 he made his Prayer Experience retreat. Before the Blessed Sacrament he touched the altar. Mari, the youth group coordinator, suddenly asked everyone to stop singing and praying out loud — something powerful had happened. She declared that the Lord was forgiving the sins of his childhood, the same sins he was telling Jesus in his interior. Jesus had broken the pact — the consecration of his life made to the demon — and had set him free by the power of His blood. Em outubro de 2005 fez sua Experiência de Oração. That same year he was baptised and received First Communion. Then, at his Confirmation, after the anointing of Chrism, he returned to his pew and closed his eyes — and saw Jesus walk from the altar toward him. He was alone in the church. Jesus sat beside him and said: “Wherever you go now, I will go with you.” He placed a chain on His own leg and on Gustavo’s. Since then, Jesus has been his companion in everything. A Slave of Mary Escravo de Maria

At twenty-four, on the Agapeterapia retreat in São Paulo led by Reinalda, he had a deep and marking encounter of inner healing. His life was transformed and built up in grace. Many things that had been unknown were revealed — but the most important was the discovery that Our Lady had always been present in his life, hidden, working quietly. He left that retreat in October with one decision: to consecrate himself to the Virgin Mary. On 27 November 2014, kneeling before Our Lady of Graces, he consecrated himself through St. Louis de Montfort’s True Devotion. From that day: a slave of Mary. Muitas coisas desconhecidas foram reveladas — mas a mais importante foi a descoberta de que Nossa Senhora sempre esteve presente em sua vida, de forma escondida, agindo silenciosamente. Saiu do encontro em outubro com uma decisão: consagrar-se à Virgem Maria. Em 27 de novembro de 2014, ajoelhado diante de Nossa Senhora das Graças, consagrou-se pela Verdadeira Devoção de São Luís Maria Grignion de Montfort. Desde esse dia: escravo de Maria.

In February 2015 he moved to Belfast. The city was tough. His father had reservations about his attending Mass — they lived together in East Belfast, a predominantly Protestant area. A broken relationship back in Brazil, colleagues pulling him to the pub. He fell — drinking, women, a year of trying to fill a Christ-shaped hole with everything but Christ. A brief return at Christmas 2015 — he even wrote a poem, “Vou Voltar”, inspired by a song by Davidson Silva — but he could not hold on to grace for long. Em fevereiro de 2015 mudou-se para Belfast. A cidade foi dura. Seu pai tinha restrições quanto à participação na Missa — moravam juntos no East Belfast, um bairro predominantemente protestante. Namorada rompida no Brasil, colegas chamando para o bar. Caiu — bebida, mulheres, um ano tentando preencher um vazio com a forma de Cristo com tudo menos Cristo. Um breve retorno no Natal de 2015 e escreveu um poema “Vou Voltar”, inspirado por uma canção do Davidson Silva, mas não conseguiu se manter firme na graça por muito tempo.

In 2016, a stranger approached him at Mass — Felipe Cunha, mistaking him for a Brazilian evangelising Belfast. Felipe took his number and invited him to a Legion of Mary retreat. At that retreat he felt the presence of God like an oasis of water springing up in the middle of a desert. His confession with Fr. Black marked him deeply — he sensed a dark energy leaving him. The flame of faith was rekindled. Then, on 15 February 2017 — the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal — he knew people across the world were praying. Alone at home, he heard an inner voice speak the words of the prophet Hosea: “My heart recoils within me.” The kitchen became a church. Twenty minutes of weeping. Our Lady took him back — without reproach. Em 2016, um estranho o abordou na Missa — Felipe Cunha, pensando que era um brasileiro evangelizando Belfast. Felipe anotou seu telefone e o convidou para um retiro da Legião de Maria. Naquele retiro, sentiu a presença de Deus como um oasis de água jorrando no meio do deserto. A sua confissão com o Padre Black o marcou profundamente — sentiu uma energia negra saindo dele. A chama da fé foi acesa novamente. Então, em 15 de fevereiro de 2017 — data da celebração dos 50 anos de fundação da Renovação Carismática Católica — ele sabia que havia gente rezando por ele ao redor do mundo. Sozinho em casa, ouviu uma voz interior dizer as palavras do profeta Oséias: “Meu coração se revira dentro de mim.” A cozinha virou uma igreja. Vinte minutos de choro. Nossa Senhora o tomou novamente em seus braços — sem censura.

Later that year he travelled to Medjugorje with the Legion of Mary. Our Lady gave back the graces he had lost and said, simply: “Your life is starting now.” Since then he has been a member of the Legion of Mary — six years as secretary — serving the evangelisation work in Belfast as a lay married man and father of four, between St. Mary’s Chapel Lane and St. Peter’s Cathedral. In 2024–2025 he served as an auxiliary member; he has since returned to active duty. Ainda em 2017 viajou a Medjugorje com a Legião de Maria. The Husband and the Father O Marido e o Pai

On 8 December 2018 — the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception — he married Marita at St. Malachy’s Church in Belfast, one of the most beautiful Catholic churches in Ireland. A date chosen not by coincidence: a wedding under the mantle of Our Lady. Em 8 de dezembro de 2018 — Solenidade da Imaculada Conceição — casou-se com Marita na Igreja St. Malachy’s em Belfast, uma das mais belas igrejas católicas da Irlanda. They are the parents of Tomás, Catarina, Teresa and Afonso — and a fifth child is on the way. Each child a gift. Each name a saint — and, as they later discovered, every one of them a Doctor of the Church: Thomas Aquinas; Catherine of Siena; Thérèse of the Child Jesus; Alphonsus Mary de Liguori. São pais de Tomás, Catarina, Teresa e Afonso — e um quinto filho está a caminho. Cada filho um presente. Cada nome, o nome de um santo — e, como descobriram mais tarde, todos também doutores da Igreja: Tomás de Aquino; Catarina de Sena; Teresinha do Menino Jesus; Afonso Maria de Ligório.

Together with his partner Felipe Cunha — the same man who first approached him at Mass — he co-founded AMDG Core, a Catholic web agency specialising in website creation, branding and social media. Everything built Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam. Junto com seu sócio Felipe Cunha — o mesmo que o abordou na Missa — co-fundou a AMDG Core, uma agência católica especializada em criação de sites, branding e social media. He remains an active member of the Legion of Mary, faithful to his weekly duties between St. Mary’s Chapel Lane and St. Peter’s Cathedral. His vocation is clear: to be a husband, to be a father, to sustain his family — and to write whenever God grants him the time and the inspiration. A poet and a writer until death.
